E Bugster, VW’s New Electric

Volkswagen's E Bugster: Electric Beetle
When VW unleashed the electric concept E Bugster at the Detroit Auto Show last month, fans knew that all the waiting had paid off. Part Beetle, part sports car, and all electric, the Bugster is truly one of those concept cars that looks like it could be in a showroom today. And while VW’s newest baby boasts a range of 100 miles and a 695-pound battery pack, maybe the best thing of all is the quick-charge capability that brings the lithium ion pack to 80 percent in just 30 minutes.
The video clip is a VW product as well, and done so professionally it might just make you want to go out right now and purchase an E Bugster, even though you, a) have never owned a Volkswagen, b) have perhaps never driven an all-electric car, and c) don’t know what the price is because it’s just a concept car and that’s top secret.
The 20-inch wheels and wide body make this car look like an expensive custom job. This is the newest member of VW’s Blue-e-motion family, has a 114-horsepower engine, and is the company’s “redefinition” of the classic Beetle, which is certainly one of the most famous cars ever made by any company in any century.
True-blue VW fans will love one of the little touches that Volkswagen added. The charge port is located directly below the shiny VW logo on the nose of the car. The car maker plans to use the electric drive unit in other Blue-e-motion cars, like the Golf. Part of the display area reveals the intensity of the battery’s regeneration, so the driver can see, at any given minute, the state of the battery’s momentary fullness.
