Japanese news sources are reporting that Mazda’s Takeri clean car will show up at this December’s prestigious Tokyo Motor Show. The Takeri, which first revealed its face just this week at a company presser, features state-of-the-art components in its idling stop technology, enhanced regenerative brake systems, and a clean engine that is said to be cutting edge. Mazda’s spokespersons reiterated their belief that consumers should look at TDI cars as alternative fuel, environmental choices. This is quite a leap for a Japanese automaker, considering that the nation is virtually without a domestic market.

Fans Dream of the Mazda 6
Those in the know, or Mazda aficionados at least, consider the Takeri to be something of a prototype of the forthcoming Mazda 6, and they are likely correct in that assumption. The regenerative braking is not new, but is unusual for a diesel. Typically, re-gen brakes are features of EV’s and hybrids, not TDI models. Based on the company’s history, however, Mazda concept cars almost always end up on showroom floors with a “6” somewhere in the nameplate.

Fuel economy is expected to be impressive, though there are no official stats forthcoming. The Skyactiv-D engine is known to be a fuel miser, thus experts are anticipating a healthy mpg rating.

A Mercedes in Disguise?
Early reports about the Takeri spoke of a strong resemblance to the newer Mercedes Benz cars of similar size, featuring specialty wheels and a unique roof design. The Mazda 6, with which Takeri seems to share biological DNA, has been a company staple since its introduction in 2002, selling over one million cars globally, the first Mazda model to do so. The second generation of the 6 came out at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2007. The latest version has racked up several awards, notably a 2010 Family Car of the Year trophy from an influential industry publication.
