Vauxhall Ampera Snags Another Major Award

The London Sunday Times has named Britain’s version of the Chevy Volt the top choice of its ‘Top 100 Cars’ section under the sub-heading of ‘Electric Cars and Hybrids.’ Calling the current European Car of the Year ‘a hybrid apart,’ the Times notes that the Ampera is silent, and will suffice for the majority of trips the average driver takes in a typical week. The editorial staff called the range-extending combustion motor a ‘brilliant solution’ to the standard dilemma facing electric cars in the area of mpc (miles-per-charge).

Noting that the Ampera is a bit pricier than standard offerings in British showrooms, judges thought the added expense was justified based on the superior product. Edging out the Nissan Leaf and the Peugeot 508 hybrid (which came in number two and three), the Vauxhall Ampera is living up to its reputation in the U.K.

Hybrid Vauxhall Ampera, Chevy Volt’s cousin

Vauxhall has taken a pair of medals at the Business Car Fleet Technology Awards being held in the city of Luton, north of London. The company’s Ampera hybrid car, the European version of the Chevy Volt, won the award for ‘best green development,’ while the Vauxhall RoadTrip was winner of ‘best app.’ Already, Vauxhall holds European Car of the Year honors along with Green Car of the Year awards for the Ampera.

The Vauxhall Ampera, like the Volt, faces no issue of range limitation, though otherwise offers drivers all the benefits of pure-electric vehicle operation. Identical to the General Motors creation, the Ampera is powered at all times by electricity, and features a range of between 25 and 50 all-electric driving miles. Tailpipe emissions during the electric portion of the trip are zero.

Hybrid Vauxhall Ampera: Details

The range extender allows for about 260 additional miles of driving, bringing the car’s total range to 310 miles. When needed, a 1.4-liter gasoline engine can power the electric motor, which ultimately drives the wheels. The combustion motor never directly powers the car.

Official European Test Cycle data show the Ampera achieving 235 mpg and combined emissions of only 27g/km. The Vauxhall RoadTrip app, which will soon be available on iPad and Android but is already free on iPhone, allows for easy tracking of business travel. The goal of the app is to make mileage claims by businesspersons quicker and simpler.
