Let me count the ways. I was looking into a Norwegian car company called THINK recently and found some very interesting statistics.

The THINK line of vehicles are all-electric city cars. Compared with a comparable gasoline-powered car, they cost about 12 cents less per mile to operate. Which honestly isn’t that much, until you realize that that 12 cents cheaper translates to the THINK City taking only about 15% as much money to operate. That’s right. It’s only 2-3 cents per mile to operate the vehicle.

In fact, electric vehicles are routinely 3 to 5 times more efficient than gasoline-powered cars. Looking at it another way, they not only cost less to fuel, but they also decrease the dependence upon petroleum, a limited resource which many countries have to import. With an electric car, the possibilities as far as how to obtain the power are almost limitless. In fact, many different avenues have been pursued, from coal power, methane, waste products, nuclear reactors, solar power, wind power, and so much more. In fact, electric cars are only bound by the seemingly boundless innovation of our brightest and best.

Electric cars also offer the driver all of the torque producible by the motor instantly, without requiring time to get up to speed. This can make electric cars more fun to drive.

And when it comes to the planet, those zero-emissions sure do look attractive!

When one realistically looks at the future of individual transportation on this planet, no one is interested in smoke-filled cities, toxic air, and a brown planet. I know that I, for one, would like to see a bright future, which starts with preserving the natural resources we already have, and continuing society with minimal interruption of the existing ecosystems. Of all the industries on this planet, the automobile industry is one that permeates every country in some degree or another. In some areas, not a single family doesn’t own a car. In others, owning a car means security and safety. The idea of electric cars is not a complicated one, nor is it extremely young. Some companies, such as THINK, have been in this business since the early 1990′s. Others, such as GM, pioneered an electric vehicle in 1996.

Providing that automakers continue to produce and present superior vehicles and put stress on innovation and improvement, our future will be bright, indeed.

A month after it filed for bankruptcy – for the fourth time in 20-years – Norway-based Think Global AS is back with a new owner, Russian investor, Boris G. Zingarevich. With European production of a revised Think City electric minicar expected to resume next spring, it is hoped that Think North America operations in Elkhart, Ind. – where the City was briefly built for the U.S. market – will also restart. Zingarevich also acquired TNA, which was a wholly owned subsidiary of Think Global, reports the New York Times. The buyout is a good fit for Zingarevich whose principal holdings are in timber and lithium-ion battery technology, which he supplied to Think before it declared bankruptcy.

Although it had only recently filed for bankruptcy, Think is back in business with some Russian backing. European production of electric cars is set to resume in the spring.
