Tesla Motors announced this week that it would repay its Dept. of Energy loans five years early, after getting a federal go ahead to speed up the repayment of the $465 million financial package. In the automaker’s filing with the SEC, it was also disclosed that the Model X electric car would have a likely production date of 2014, rather than 2013. The filing noted that Tesla Motors would focus its managerial attention on the rollout of the Model S sedan.

Tesla Model X: Video

The video clip above includes the short Tesla Model X presentation from the 2013 Detroit Motor Show. It reveals the unusual, elegant EV in all its sleek glory, from above, below, and at unusual vantage points around the falcon doors. A company spokesperson explains why Tesla opted for the unique styling, and what went into the decision to produce the car in the first place. Quite different from its cousin, the Model S electric sedan, the X is a giant of an EV. When it finally arrives in showrooms in late 2014, there will be a choice of battery sizes, as on the Model S. The company’s third production car, the Model X will be the world’s only all-wheel-drive car that features a frunk (front trunk). As with the Model S, the X will have a 17-inch touch screen and all the futuristic interior appointments one would expect in a Tesla product.

Tesla Model X

The Model X will be offered with both a 60 kWh and 85 kWh battery pack. The company will manufacture between 10,000 and 15,000 Model X cars at its plant in California. Both announcements were big news for the company, having planned to release the X this year. Many in the auto industry are encouraged to see Tesla repaying the federal loan so quickly, as the move indicates a sign of financial strength and managerial stability.

Tesla Motors will announce the exact release date for its fourth-quarter 2012 earnings statement this week. Having already booked 13,000 customer orders for the Model S electric sedan, Tesla will likely sell every car it manufactures in 2013. Tesla Motors is also in the process of fitting the U.S. highway system with a network of charging stations designed specifically for its vehicles. Many of those stations are already in place on the East Coast and throughout California. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors, has predicted that 2013 will see a profit margin of 25 percent for his firm.

Tesla Motors: Video

View the clip below for a complete look at the interior of the Tesla Model X, which was on display at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. As the reviewer mentions, the 17-inch touch screen definitely dominates the view from the driver’s seat. As he tests the controls, notice that virtually everything, from door locks and climate control, to lights and seat adjustment, are a part of the display’s command language. A triple-row SUV that can hold up to seven passengers, the Model X is an impressive work of EV engineering.

Tesla Model X

Latest news from the automaker says the Model X production line will start up toward the end of 2013, and aims for customer deliveries early next year. Before federal and local tax credits and any other incentives, unofficial price estimates for the Model X hover in the $75,000-$85,000 range, though the company has not verified pricing for the car yet. One thing is certain, namely that the Model X will be offered with a choice of all-wheel-drive or rear-drive. In addition, as with the Model S, Tesla Motors will sell Model X in two different battery-pack sizes.

Green transportation entrepreneur Elon Musk, founder of Tesla Motors, is considered one of the world’s leading innovators. The Tesla Roadster, Model S, and Model X have the potential to completely transform the look of passenger travel in this century. Musk is also the founder of PayPal, an online payment firm, and Space X, which works to advance the state of rocket science and space travel. The 41-year-old green visionary holds two bachelor’s degrees, one in physics and the other in business. He also created the Musk Foundation, a charitable organization that encourages green energy development, science education, and child healthcare.

Elon Musk: Video

For a fascinating look at Space Exploration Technologies, aka Space X, view the short video clip above. Elon Musk founded the company in 2002 and it is now the premier privately owned space exploration company in existence. Besides ferrying supplies to the International Space Station (ISS), Space X has created originally designed rockets as well as a cargo and crew capsule. Space X sent a mission to the ISS last May, and is currently working under a NASA contract worth over $1.5 billion. Headquartered in Hawthorne, Calif., the company is attempting to reuse all of its rockets by developing a vertical landing system for each spacecraft.

Elon Musk

Always the innovator and philosopher, but with a keen sense of humor, Musk once commented on the computer age by noting, “In terms of the Internet, it’s like humanity acquiring a collective nervous system. Whereas previously we were more like a collection of cells that communicated by diffusion. With the advent of the Internet, it was suddenly like we got a nervous system. It’s a hugely impact thing.” However, when not ruminating about the meaning of our existence, Musk definitely has a lighter side, explaining, “I would like to die on Mars; just not on impact.”

In an attempt to highlight the interior of its newest electric crossover, Tesla Motors has brought its Model X to the Detroit Auto Show so the media and the public can view the intricacies of the electric car’s updated styling. The three rows of seating on the display model are a mix of white and black upholstery. The middle row is black, while the front and rear rows are pure white. The elegant, sleek design of the Model X interior is impressive, at once futuristic and in the moment.

Tesla Model X: Video

Fresh footage of the latest version of Tesla’s eye-opener 2014 Model X electric sedan at the Detroit Auto Show awaits you (below). The white stunner was a crowd magnet as it drew photogs and journalists to its gorgeous interior which is a mixture of solid black and pure white, though production models will offer countless color schemes. The video clip below features a series of still photos of the Model X that will remain on display at the NAIAS in Detroit until the final day of the show on Jan. 29.

Tesla Model X

While the Model X will come with the choice of a 60 kWh or 85 kWh battery, as does its older sibling the Model S, there is no word yet on whether all-wheel drive will be on the menu. Some reliable sources say AWD is definitely in the mix, so we’ll just have to enjoy the ambiguity for now. Late 2013 is the designated commencement date for production, but deliveries of the Model X will not take place until the first half of 2014. High-resolution photos of the car can also be seen on the carmaker’s website (see below).

With no import duty, no parking fees, and no congestion tax, the EV is gaining sales traction. In fact, the Nissan Leaf is already the thirteenth best-selling vehicle in Norway.

Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model S: Video

Norway’s capital city, Oslo, has the highest per capita electric car ownership rate in the world, and has laid claim to that title ever since the statistic has been calculated. This year, the trend is continuing in a big way, as the national government makes efforts to wire the major cities for EV transportation. In Oslo especially, as the following video brief points out, one cannot travel far without noticing charging stations. The downtown area offers free parking for EV owners and the national congestion tax is waived for electric cars. Another aspect that interests automotive engineers is the fact that Norway is a particularly cold place, yet electric vehicles seem to operate at peak efficiency.

Nissan leaf, Tesla Model S

While the Leaf and Model S build up their fan bases in Oslo and other Norwegian cities, Norwegians typically buy about 10,000 EVs per year. That is impressive, considering that the U.S. population is 63 times that of Norway’s, yet only bought five times as many electric cars as did Norwegians. Already, Norway has built more than 3,500 charging stations to service its population of 5 million people.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Motors, sent out a short but momentous message this week to his 100,000-plus Twitter followers. It said, “Am happy to report that Tesla was narrowly cash flow positive last week. Continued improvement expected through year end.” The cutting-edge EV manufacturer uses its own website and Twitter to update the public on company news. In between regular quarterly reports, fans of the unique automaker await the latest scoops by checking in with the Tesla Motors website on a regular basis.

Tesla Motors’ CEO: Video

If you never had a chance to see Tesla Motors’ CEO Elon Musk when he was interviewed on TV newsmagazine ‘60 Minutes,’ now is your chance. Though the questioning centers primarily on Musk’s efforts to build Space X into a competitive business, it is revealing to witness the philosophy behind his thinking. The way Musk approaches seemingly impossible challenges and achieves success applies as much to his electric car company as it does to Space X. Even his most enthusiastic supporters are the first to admit that the electric car business is full of surprises, headaches, and pitfalls on the road to solvency. That is why this week’s news about positive cash flow for Tesla Motors is actually a much bigger story than it appears at first blush.

Tesla Motors

The story behind the story is that Tesla’s Model S is the product that put the EV maker back in the black, as the company expects to sell 20,000 of the electric sedans during the 2013 calendar year. In 2014, Tesla Motors will double down with production of the luxury Model X. As of 2013, the sticker price of the Model S will be $59,900 before federal and state tax incentives.

Deliveries for the Tesla Model X will begin in calendar year 2014, when the luxury SUV electric car will be competing in the price range of Audi, Volvo, BMW, Lexus, and other high-end models. With optional all-wheel-drive, the X seats seven and features a very low center of gravity. The electric SUV leaps to 60 mph in a tad under 5 seconds and will be unique among production cars with its gull-wing doors.

Tesla Model X: Video

Here is a rare treat, in the form of a video test drive of the Tesla Model X electric car. Join the driver as he spends a bit of time tooling around with a carload of passengers in the X, all the while delivering a verbal review right down to the feel of the seats and the solidity of the control buttons. Because there is not nearly as much media attention on the X right now, as opposed to the Model S, this test ride is a good preview of things to come. You need not be a Tesla fan to appreciate the futuristic styling and elegant design flourishes on the Model X.

Tesla Model X

As the very definition of ‘cutting edge’ technology, the Model X achieves 90 mpg-equivalent. Anticipated pricing for the X is thought to be in the $62,000-$100,000 range, which will run from base model to top of the line, loaded version.

For up to date news from Tesla Motors, see the company’s official website. Unlike many auto manufacturers, Tesla uses its corporate site to release breaking news items about its vehicles. Besides that, the site is packed with some stunning photography of the Roadster, Model S, and Model X electric cars. Green transportation enthusiasts have been known to spend hours perusing the Tesla Motors website, so be warned. It is addictive!

Speaking in the aftermath of a hard-fought U.S. presidential election, Tesla Motors CEO, Elon Musk, said he thinks the outlook for electric cars will not go backwards, but may advance a bit in the next year or two. In a related comment, the entrepreneur took the opportunity to mention a pet cause, namely federal tax credits for electric vehicles. Musk would like to see the federal share of such credits rise to $10,000, but whether that happens or not, the automaker will be installing fast-charge stations around the U.S. throughout 2013. After his Model S won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award this week, Musk is in demand at media events and automotive gatherings.

Tesla: Video

For a look back at where it all began, view the following video clip, which features a short profile of the Tesla Roadster’s origins. As the narrator points out, July of 2006 was when the world got its first clue about what was to come, when Tesla Motors announced its plans for the Roadster. A lucky few, the clip’s narrator among them, was invited to the Tesla plant to test drive the car. Considering how far the company has traveled since those early days, it is interesting to note the same feel, the same sense of wonder that all Tesla cars inspire. Just watching the film of a Roadster climbing along mountain roads imparts a sense of what the company is all about.

Telsa

The Tesla Model X, a crossover vehicle, should see showrooms by sometime in 2014. After that, the company will be building its long-awaited entry for the mid-price range, a $30,000 EV that is yet unnamed. Some have suggested “Model E,” to connote the word “electric,” but also to complement the other two models, the S and the X.

Tesla Motors has been enjoying a very positive week in the stock market, with prices up by 4.5 percent, to $30.25 per share. Because of the fact that the Model S has not yet fully impacted the bottom line, Tesla is looking to the next 12 months as being a quite favorable period in the company’s history. A spokesperson, commenting on the most recent financial disclosures and stock market movement, said the Model S was “well received” by the public.

Tesla Stock Up: Here’s Why

During discussions of stock prices and financial strength, a company’s core values are often overlooked. For a complete discussion of why Tesla continues to be a favorite of investors and drivers, see the following video clip. The narrator, a Tesla executive, describes the cars in detail, but also gives us a taste of the Tesla philosophy, which includes a total dedication to excellence. Not just a buzzword from old Business Management textbooks, the term actually means something to those who operate Tesla Motors. The spirit and attitude of excellence comes through in the narration of the video clip.

Tesla Stock: Future

With a continued rollout to a much wider market than the company has ever seen, the Model S looks to put Tesla Motors on the map. Until the S came along, the company was known only to niche buyers, who had perhaps had some experience with the Roadster, or followed company news from afar.

Now, with the Model S seeing actual customer deliveries, and the company increasing the number of store openings by the week, one can reasonably expect the next year to be a time of significant growth for Tesla.

For more about the makers of the Model S and Model X, as well as the classic Tesla Roadster, see the company’s official website:

SAE does a great job of providing incredible detail about the auto industry. Some are technically minded, some aren’t. If you are, check out what the SAE web site has to offer www.sae.org/ Just come on back when you are finished!

Adam T, Bob Ts eldest youngster, had already engineered a flying model before he left the Tesla Showroom.

If you haven’t already done so, check out Bobs Blog on our Home page for his recent encounter with the Model X. Very informative article!

I recognized that all of you were not at the display of the Model X that took place in the Tesla showroom the other day. A general assumption, as the showroom is not that big, so I filmed it for your pleasure.

All the Specs for the Model X can be found here: http://www.teslamotors.com/models/specs

But not to waste any more of your time with chatter about what was revealed, watch the presentation yourself and let us know what you think about the X and if you will be putting in an order for yours!

We don’t make a dime on your order. Your Happiness is our reward!

Tesla started exhibiting the new Tesla X SUV Prototype today at the Tesla store on Santana Row in San Jose, CA. Additionally Tesla is demonstrating four of its signature S models behind the store at the charging location. They can be viewed in a variety of colors and you can sit inside. Test drives are not yet available!

The Tesla X SUV has some unique features besides being an all electric vehicle, and possibly the first of it kind. SUV’s are big in the USA so it makes sense that this is the next model Tesla would produce. Production is expected in about 2 years, so if your current SUV is about due for replacement in two years, then plan on putting this car on your list to possibly replace it. Although the X is built on the S platform the range is expected to be about 10% less due to its larger size. The range should be around 200 miles for the cheaper version and 300 miles with the bigger battery.

And large it is! At least inside and in storage. The front trunk is available for a full set of luggage as there is no engine and the motor, which is a fraction the size of a conventional gasoline engine, is tucked on the rear axel where normally the rear differential would sit. Since the electric car does not need a transmission there is space savings there as well. The battery sits along the full length of the bottom of the car and is unnoticeable. The lack of a transmission contributes to the space saving. The second row has 3 seats.

Tesla S Display at Santana Row.

The Tesla X SUV will have all-wheel drive, and in its fastest configuration will accelerate faster than a Porsche 911.

The rear doors are called Falcon doors. They open upwards, therefore you can park in tight spaces and still open the door without worries of hitting the car next to you, and exit comfortably.

Store personel are there to answer any questions and they are very knowledgable. Every hour there is a life briefing about the X
