Tata Nano

Tata Motors will sell its Nano micro-car in the U.S. by 2015, though significant design and mechanical changes will be made to the world’s smallest production vehicle. Those changes are expected to bring the Nano’s U.S. sticker price to around $8,000. Three years from now, that will be well low enough to give Nano sole ownership of the title, “cheapest car in America.” With the current U.S. fixation on high-mileage, low-frills vehicles, most expect the tiny, gas miser to be a huge seller.

Car enthusiasts of all stripes will enjoy the following video clip, which shows a Tata Nano going through full production, from its first entry onto the assembly line to final testing. The Tata Motors plant is a 1,100-acre mega-complex featuring all the most modern assembly systems, robots, and computer diagnostic technology. Precision welding is done by a team of 130 robots! The paint-dipping process and the welding footage are among the highlights of the short film. Every Tata Nano gets a “shower test” under high-pressure water before it leaves the assembly line. After that, the world-class test track is the final stage for every car.

There has been much speculation that Tata would produce either an electric or a diesel version of the Nano, but so far, no production model of either is officially planned. However, the company did begin partnership talks with a Norwegian electric car consultant to examine the prospect of making a Nano EV. As for diesel plans, Tata spokespersons have repeatedly denied rampant rumors in the Indian media that it had a diesel Nano in the works. Some think the U.S. Tata will look something like the concept Nano Europa, an upscale version of the tinier car that was on display at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show.
