At the upcoming New York International Auto Show, Subaru will unveil a fresh concept car as well as the anticipated 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid, which is set to arrive in U.S. showrooms later this year. The Crosstrek will be Subaru’s first hybrid offering, though price details have not yet been announced. Company spokespersons said detailed specs for the car, as well as price data, would be revealed at the New York event. The vehicle is said to feature the automaker’s specially engineered symmetrical AWD engineering as well as a unique hybrid drivetrain.

Subaru Crosstrek: Video

Subaru’s advertisement for its all-new 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid is shown in its entirety above. With the slogan, “Built to get dirty,” the car obviously looks to appeal to a demographic that appreciates all-wheel-drive cars, in this case a hybrid crossover. Labeling the Crosstrek the “most fuel-efficient AWD hybrid crossover in America,” Subaru notes that the vehicle features its Boxer engine and is the lowest-emission vehicle of its kind in the U.S. Adding to the green credentials of the Crosstrek, the ad mentions that it is built in a zero-landfill plant, boasts 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and is set to arrive in showrooms in the Fall of 2013.

Subaru Factoid

Little known in Western nations is the origin of Subaru’s name. As a subsidiary of Japanese conglomerate Fuji Heavy Industries, Subaru and other companies make up the family of entities under the FHI parent corporation. The logo, which depicts the stars of constellation Pleiades, is meant to represent the group of companies that make up the FHI consortium. In Japanese, the name of the constellation is not Pleiades, but Subaru. Subaru has been a bit late to the game in terms of hybrid car development, but with this aggressive new campaign for the Crosstrek, it appears the company is now quite serious about selling green vehicles.

Subaru pulled back the curtain on its Viziv diesel-hybrid concept this past Tuesday morning at the Geneva Motor Show. The company has placed two electric motors with a 2.0-liter boxer diesel engine to show off its “vision for innovation,” a phrase from which Subaru conjured the Viziv moniker.

Company literature on the new model proclaims it to be, “a new design direction…that will take the Subaru brand into the future.” With its lithium-ion battery pack, butterfly doors, CVT transmission, and all-wheel-drive capability, the 4-seater is unlike anything the carmaker has yet produced. The Geneva Motor Show, one of the global auto industry’s most significant expositions, runs through March 17.

Subaru Viziv: Video

Subaru enthusiasts will find much to love in the carmaker’s freshest concept vehicle, now on display at the Geneva Motor Show. As the above video clip mentions, the Viziv diesel-hybrid concept car from Subaru is a sort of styling signpost for what lies ahead, perhaps three, five, or even seven years down the road. The exterior design flourishes and attractive, aerodynamic body are not the surprising facts about the car. Its drivetrain, however, is a very big story, pointing to a future lineup of alternative-fuel Subarus that definitely break the mold for the Japanese automaker. At the Geneva event, specs for the Viziv are scarce. Fuel efficiency, torque, and all the standard laundry list of data are absent. Some interpret the paucity of numerical information to mean that Subaru wishes to draw attention to one key fact about the Viziv, and that is the diesel-hybrid system. Automakers use shows like this one to make all sorts of announcements about their intentions for the near future. Subaru seems to be telling us exactly where it plans to go.

According to several sources within the auto industry, Subaru is set to show a production version of its Tourer Hybrid concept car at the upcoming New York International Auto Show in late March. The car would mark the first time Subaru has produced a hybrid vehicle. If the reports are accurate, Subaru will sell its new hybrid vehicle in both the U.S. and Japan. While the production hybrid will be of the so-called “mild” variety, some industry-watchers think the new version will borrow at least a few elements from the Tourer Hybrid concept.

Subaru Hybrid: Video

The Subaru Tourer Hybrid concept car made its debut at the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show, where it attracted a good deal of attention for its unusual doors, if nothing else. In fact, the hybrid was noteworthy from its epic debut that year in Tokyo, attracting media attention due to its unusual drivetrain design and ultra-futuristic interior. Subaru has long been dedicated to the ideas of comfort and fun, and the Tourer Hybrid was a gigantic nod in that direction. Notice the car-to-car and road-to-car communication systems, a feature that was quite forward-thinking way back in 2009. When the latest version of this unusual car arrives in New York next month, it will be interesting to see how many of the original high-tech flourishes remain.

Subaru Hybrid

The production model that will be on display in New York, if predictions hold, will not be able to drive on electric power alone. The concept Tourer Hybrid, however, had a pair of electric motors and a 2.0-liter gasoline engine. In that arrangement, one of the electric motors ran the vehicle’s electrical functions while the other, in the rear, propelled the car when the combustion engine was not performing that task.
