The New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) will open its doors to the public on Mar. 29 in the 900,000-plus square-foot Javits Center. Featuring more than 1,000 vehicles, and revealing the World Car of the Year at the event’s conclusion, the 2013 NYIAS will also display several world debuts. The show is an important gathering for many industry players, hosting a meeting of the Greater New York Auto Dealers during the week, as well as an International Motor Press Association get-together.

New York Auto Show: Video

View some truly amazing film footage (above) from a vehicle parade that took place right around the time of the first New York Auto Show in 1900. Courtesy of the Library of Congress Motion Picture division, the group of vehicles must have been quite the unique attraction at the time. Lacking air bags, radios, and in most cases, combustion engines, the parade featured a variety of American and European models. Electricity was still the predominant form of propulsion for cars at that time.

New York Auto Show

The New York event is famous for its World Car of the Year Award. Last year’s Green Car division was won by the Mercedes-Benz 250 CDI. The show also hands out trophies for overall Car of the Year, Performance Car of the Year and Design Car of the Year. In fact, the show never disappoints when it comes to alternative fuel vehicles. The 2012 NYIAS displayed the Chevy Volt, Ford’s new C-Max hybrid, the Cadillac Escalade, the BMW ActiveHybrid, and the Ford Focus Electric, along with many other green rides.
If you plan to attend the New York Auto Show, purchase tickets online and remember to bring the printout to the show. Tickets are transferable but not refundable. Or just show up at the door and buy your tickets there. Adult admission is $15 per day.

For all the latest on the NYIAS, see the event’s website:

The bio-fuel Trident Iceni is on its way to the Salon Prive show, where many of the world’s most expensive and luxurious vehicles will be on display. The drive train is able to run on bio-diesel, diesel, linseed oil, or palm oil. Take your pick! The show is held at London’s fashionable Syon Park. The Iceni boasts a mid-front, 6.6-liter turbo-diesel engine and can roar at a top speed of 200 mph, dashing from zip to 60 in 3.7 seconds.

Trident Iceni Diesel: Video

For a quick walk-around of the elusive Trident Iceni, the clip below features a short test-drive and a bit of background about the hot ride. The Iceni is certainly one of the most attractive cars to come along in years, bearing a slight resemblance to some of the newer all-electric sports cars on the market today.

The narrator highlights the 2000-mile total range of the Iceni by mentioning that it can drive from London to Istanbul on one tank. Everything about the Iceni is amazing, the speed, the acceleration, and the fuel choices. The car simply is a stunner on paper and on the road.

Trident Iceni Diesel, Bio-diesel, Palm Oil …

The trident is one of a handful of modern super cars that are designed to run on several different types of fuel, sort of like an ultra-hybrid. Rather than a choice between two, the driver can choose up to four different fuels for the Iceni. So-called triple-hybrids have been around for many years, but so far, the appearance of a vehicle that can run of four different fuels is something of a stunner. Trident Sports Cars director, Phillip Bevan, commented, “We are very pleased to be at Salon Prive, which this year is a great celebration of all things British…”

The consensus among experts at San Antonio’s Plug-In 2012 Conference and Exposition last week was that electric cars are here to stay, even though significant challenges remain. Among the expert panelists and guest speakers at the event, many pointed to the surprisingly fast development of infrastructure for electric cars. Noting that an EV costs, on average, approximately one-fourth what it costs to drive a gasoline vehicle, attendees mentioned range and infrastructure as the two biggest hurdles for car makers and owners.

Electric Car Range: Video

The Chevy Spark is profiled in the short video below, highlighting many of its features as it was displayed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit earlier this year. General Motors can now claim to have a complete portfolio of alternative fuel vehicles, and the Spark’s all-electric capability might just be a breakthrough EV for American drivers.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), organizer of the Plug-In event in San Antonio, is a non-profit entity that works on all sorts of projects which have to do with development of electric science, whether that means electric vehicles or science programs for private companies. Essentially, EPRI is about electricity in all its variations. Their main goal is to help their member entities “provide society with reliable, affordable, and environmentally responsible electricity.” The members of EPRI generate and deliver over 90 percent of all electrical power in the U.S. In addition, the organization has members in 40 foreign nations.

Electric Car Range: Facts

San Antonio has been one of the nation’s most enthusiastic cities when it comes to electrification of its roadways. Early on, the municipal government adopted numerous alternative fuel vehicles for city fleets, and now is out front in the effort to put charging stations all over the metropolitan area.

The 2012 New York auto show featured quite a roundup of electric and hybrid cars and trucks. The following video link gives a good overview of just what the show had to offer. With everything from concept cars to production hybrids and EVs at the ride-and-drive, the NY show featured perhaps the best collection of alternative energy vehicles of any major auto event up to now.

Though not one of the more “practical” electrics, the DeLorean EV was one of the stars of New York since virtually everyone alive has seen the Back to the Future film in which the original car was featured. The narrator makes an important point early on when he mentions that electric and hybrid cars do not demand that consumers give up looks or styling for alternative power. Indeed, prices of several models are in the non-stratosphere range, so any consumer who really wants an EV or hybrid should take a test drive at the local dealership. You can even rent a hybrid or all-electric from most major rental companies.

The Prius C is a good example of real-world alt-fuel driving. With a starting price under $20,000, the snazzy little hybrid gets over 50 mpg due to its efficient motor-engine system. That’s quite a difference from the $95,000 price tag on the DeLorean EV. And while most drivers don’t associate the word Lexus with green transportation, New York showed off the Lexus ES 300h hybrid.

And don’t’ miss that pair of gorgeous BMW concept cars, soon to see production. The BMW i3 and i8 are an all-electric and a hybrid, respectively. Anyone who thinks green cars are “boring,” has not seen BMW’s offerings. All in all, the New York auto show was a winning venue for green car enthusiasts.

For more about some of the electric cars discussed in the video, here are the official corporate sites for the Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi i-MiEV, and the Chevy Volt:

Japanese vocational students representing Nihon Automobile College have just been named winners of the prestigious PDP Andrea Pinninfarina design contest sponsored by Think3. The team designed and built a prototype EV that features an ultra-light aluminum frame and other innovative components. The environmentally friendly car of the future, as the students like to call their creation, is no homemade science project, but a highly sophisticated, two-seat sports car that was inspired by the Honda Insight hybrid.

Because the students had a limited budget, they were forced to come up with creative approaches to virtually every aspect of the design process, which was primarily a product of CAD software programs. The amateur technicians used power analysis to create the fabricated aluminum body, which was a bit of a risk for a group that had never worked with anything but steel.

The video clip gives a thorough walk-around of the car and features a few interview questions with a team spokesperson, whose surprise at winning the award comes through in his answers (even though his native Japanese is translated and scrolled in English on the screen).

Some vital specs of the vehicle are not yet known because it has not been extensively road-tested. For example, the maximum speed and range will be determined in a series of driving trials to take place within the next few weeks. Initially, the students were expecting to use a steel body for the car, but their instructor surprised them with a recommendation for lighter, more EV-friendly aluminum and the group obviously rose to the challenge.

The students’ award has earned them a spot at the prestigious Tokyo Motor Show, which will next be held in 2013 and, as always, will feature cutting-edge green technology.

This year’s New York International Auto Show could more aptly be called the Big Green Apple Alternative Fuel Show, but that name is even more cumbersome than the official one! Seriously, the array of alt-fuel cars seems to grow each year at all the big car events, and New York is no exception. In the brief video clip below, you can take a virtual walk-around of some of the event highlights. Gawk at the Smart Electric Drive mini-car, check out the latest, and hottest, electric offerings from BMW, and basically wander the floor looking at all kinds of cool stuff. After all, that’s what cars shows are all about, right?

Infiniti and Acura unveiled a couple of hybrids at this year’s New York show, a venue where all the major automakers like to make big, splashy news headlines.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3DvE8pYH8U

A bit more about the Smart Electric Drive, which you will see in the video: Originally, the car was called Smart Fourtwo EV when it roamed the streets of London on trial runs way back in the dark ages of 2007. One hundred vehicles were involved in that original testing, which was soon followed by more of the same in Berlin and the U.S. over the next four years.

If you want to know what Infiniti luxury electric cars will look like, the NY show gave a preview in the form of the company’s LE concept cars, which are a far cry from the Nissan Leaf in any case. This year’s New York show saw the unveiling of Acura’s RLX concept car, eventually to be offered in a hybrid drive version that will be called the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD. Whatever your favorite makes and models, the New York International Auto Show has something for every taste.

The concept cars, new production models, green cars, and everything else on wheels showed up this weekend in New York, filing into the Jacob Javits Convention Center for the New York International Automobile Show. All the latest green technology will be showcased, as well as the newest offerings in electric, hybrid, and fuel-efficient combustion cars and trucks from every major automaker on earth. The Big Apple’s show is big indeed. This year’s event will feature more alternative fuel vehicles than ever before, and will display many of the high-mileage diesel and hybrid cars from U.S. and foreign car makers.

One of the green selections that attendees will see includes the Ford Fusion. In all its hybrid and plug-in hybrid glory the car will be a centerpiece of the green section of the show. Featuring EcoBoost 4-cylinder engines with start-stop technology, Ford has placed the car in one of the most visible positions in its display area.

Toyota will be showing off its patented Hybrid Synergy Drive on the Prius C. The lowest priced Prius, Toyota is hoping that the car will draw a global, young demographic. With technology and fuel efficiency second to none, the C has been called a game-changer in its segment. The car’s 50 mpg fuel rating, along with its reasonable price tag, has already made it the star of the hybrid genre.

Besides being one of the biggest auto shows in the world, the New York event acts as something of a corporate summit venue for members of the International Motor Press Association and New York auto dealers. The show is typically held in March or April and has been an ongoing annual event since 1900. With very few exceptions, the event is held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania’s Stabler Arena was home to the Lehigh Valley Auto Show last week, where hybrid and electric cars and trucks took center stage. This was partly due to wise advance planning but also a result of unpredictably high gasoline prices, which seemed to bring spectators out of the woodwork. One of the best attended shows in the event’s history, it is sponsored by the Greater Lehigh Valley Auto Dealers Association, who chose the green theme quite some time ago. The organizers had absolutely no idea that March of 2012 would bring a wave of oil price spikes nationwide. Car giants Chevy, Nissan, Ford and Toyota showed off all the latest tweaks to Volt, Leaf, Fusion, and Prius, respectively.

This year’s event has a few firsts, at least for Lehigh Valley. There was an entire lot covered with all the latest SUVs, dozens of cars in the ‘Clean and Green’ exhibit, and a unique NASCAR display that magnetically drew huge crowds all weekend long. Among major exhibitors were local favorites GM, Chryser, and Ford, along with foreign mega-manufacturers Fiat, Lotus, Infiniti, Lexus, and Volkswagen.

The floor at Greater Lehigh Valley Auto Show

Calendar year 2012 is already looking to be an uptick season for overall car sales, with most experts pointing to a likely 10 percent increase over 2011 totals. Economists who specialize in the auto industry say that last year’s economic hard times caused many consumers to put off major purchases. With all that backlog of demand, it is nearly inevitable that sales will rise at least 5 percent this coming year, according to the professional number-crunchers.

According to the event’s organizers, the Lehigh show looks to be even bigger and better next year, so if you are planning a trip to the area, be sure to check out all the cool electric and hybrid vehicles. Here is the official website for the show:

Fisker’s much discussed, “secret” project will make a very public appearance at the upcoming New York Auto Show. In fact, no one outside of the company can say for sure that the forthcoming car to be exhibited is the super-secret Fisker Nina. That is just a guess, but probably an accurate one. The range-extended EV sedan to follow Karma is code-named Nina, though that will likely not be the final name of the car. That’s a secret too.

Nina has a few bragging points already, namely that fact that it will be manufactured in the U.S., and will feature a sticker price which will bring it under the $50K mark after tax incentives. Translation: It will cost $49,900. One tidbit is known, and that has to do with the Nina’s entire line. There will not be just one Nina, there will be several, certainly to include a sedan and who knows how many others. Secret sources and industry insiders say that Nina production should begin by late 2012 or sometime thereafter.

The New York Auto Show runs from April 6 to 15 this year, but opens to the press on April 4, after which time there will undoubtedly be plenty of press on this secretive automobile. The New York Show, held every year around Easter at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, is one of the larger car shows in North America, and typically features numerous unveilings of concept and pre-production models by all the major car makers. Since 1900, the New York Auto Show has been held each year.

A sampling of this year’s New York world debuts: (All are 2013 models) Volkswagen Beetle Roadster, SRT Viper, Porsche Cayenne Diesel, Nissan Altima, Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG and CLC-Class, Hyundai Santa Fe, and the newest version of the Buick Enclave.

Last year’s winner of the World Green Car of the Year award was the Chevy Volt. The year before that it was the Volkswagen BlueMotion. This year, neither the Chevy Volt nor the Volkswagen BlueMotion is not in the final lineup, but Ford’s Focus Electric is, making its first shot at green greatness in the Big Apple’s big show. The yearly routine begins to unfold at the Geneva Motor Show each March, where the finalists for WGCOTY are announced. Then, one of the big moments at the New York Auto Show is the official announcement, which is often an unexpected candidate. Sixty-six journalists from the automotive industry comprise the judging panel for the award. The panel is quite international as well, hailing from 25 separate nations.

The first round of voting entails choosing 34 nominees, from which are chosen, again by voting, three finalists. This year’s “thrilling three” are Ford’s Focus Electric, the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4, and the Mercedes-Benz E250 CDI Blue Efficiency (which could win ‘longest car name’ award if there were such a category!). Note that, by chance, there is one all-electric in the final three, one diesel, and one hybrid.

The New York event definitely has something for everyone, making sure to cover all the traditional cars with announcement of World Car of the Year Award too, a category that includes traditional gasoline cars, and everything else. Those finalists are the Porsche 911, the Volkswagen Up!, and the BMW 3 Series. Last year’s winner was the Nissan Leaf, a surprise winner competing against a fine lineup of mostly combustion models.

Schwarzenegger used the Geneva media event to spread the word about his latest efforts.

The former bodybuilder cites the example of catalytic converters in the 1970s, an idea that faced much resistance from consumers and industry at first, but later caught on and ended up being an enormous plus for air quality all over the world. Invoking a bit of his old gym pep talk, Mr. S. noted that car makers are doing a reasonably good job of promoting green autos, but need to do more, “… they always can do better. I always push for the ultimate. I always go all-out,” he said.

Most of his time on the floor at Geneva was spent in the special area for green vehicles or with media, relentlessly promoting the low-emission cars and trucks. But it was not all business, as the cheerful and adventurous Terminator took a seat behind the wheel of a flashy new Bugatti that was on display. Even if the Bugatti were an EV, that $7,500 federal incentive would not do much to offset its $1.8 million sticker. In any event, The Arnold enjoyed himself at the show, did plenty of pep talks for green causes, and added a bit of celebrity firepower to one of the world’s most prestigious auto shows. He’ll be back.
