The latest version of the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid will debut at the upcoming Shanghai Auto Show in late April. The 2014 model carries a sticker price of just under $100,000, boasts 416 horsepower and offers 20 miles of all-electric driving. This is the company’s first plug-in hybrid. Those interested in purchasing the Panamera S will have to wait until November to buy one. Porsche has not stated the vehicle’s mileage data, though that information will likely precede the launch by several months. The 2013 model, which is not a hybrid, earned an EPA fuel economy rating of 22/30 mpg.

Porsche: Video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTzYooSTRek

On the international racing circuit, Porsche is known for another hybrid car, the 911 GT3 R, which can be seen in the above video clip prepping for a major race. Like many automakers, Nissan and Audi to name but two, Porsche uses its racing vehicles to test individual components for conventional hybrid offerings. The footage shows renowned driver Nico Hulkenberg taking the GT3 R for a competitive spin on the world famous Nurburgring Nordschleife. Porsche is the world’s largest manufacturer of race cars and continues to dominate motorsports. The company has notched more than 28,000 wins in international competitions, notably an unmatched 16 victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the most prestigious auto events in existence.

Porsche Panamera Hybrid at Shanghai

Porsche has chosen to reveal its new hybrid at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition, also known as Auto Shanghai 2013. The event is one of the largest auto shows in Asia, annually trading venues with the Beijing Auto Show. This year’s gala will fill 17 gigantic indoor exhibition halls at Shanghai’s Expo Center. The event runs from Apr. 21-29 and will feature a one-day press preview on Apr. 20.

A jury of 66 experts announced the World Car of the Year winners for 2013 at the New York International Auto Show this week. Volkswagen’s Golf took the overall prize as WCOTY. The green category was won by Tesla Motors’ Model S electric sedan, while the performance trophy went to the Porsche Boxster/Cayman, and World Car Design of the Year honors were picked up by the ultra chic Jaguar F-Type. In a rare double play of sorts, the Golf has now captured two of the biggest international car prizes, winning here in New York for World Car of the Year, and only weeks ago snagging the coveted European Car of the Year trophy. For Tesla Motors, the victory as World Green Car of the Year is a sweet addition to a rafter of prestigious awards of every variety.

World Car of the Year: Video

See the clip above for a scintillating two minutes of coverage from the New York Auto Show’s unveiling of the VW Golf. The new, super fuel-efficient Golf is the seventh generation for the model. It is not only larger and roomier, but boasts much better mileage and is the lightest in the series. Nearly every major carmaker at this year’s NY event offers hybrid, electric, or ultra fuel-efficient models. While some purists do not consider high-mileage cars like the Golf to be “green,” the definition is certainly open to interpretation.

World Car of the Year

An obviously elated Walter da Silva, VW’s global design director, noted the high level of competition for the WCOTY award and pointed out the difficulty in creating a car like the Golf, which is able to rise above some of the best efforts by extremely talented designers and engineers the world over.

For more information about Tesla Motors, Volkswagen, and Jaguar, see the official corporate websites, below. Each of the companies came away from the World Car of the Year Awards with a major win.

Some of the hottest tech trends and sharpest concept cars will be on display at this week’s LA Auto Show, opening for media preview days on Wednesday and the public on Friday. Porsche will be unveiling its 2014 Cayman, which has already been deluged with press coverage. The Cayman and 23 other vehicles will make their world debut at the event.

LA Auto Show: Video

Ride and drive events have always been a part of the auto show circuit, but in recent years, they have become the focal point of numerous regional shows. Many Los Angeles residents, like those in Detroit and New York, attend the gigantic expositions with the primary goal of test-driving a half-dozen or so new cars. For many consumers, this is the best way to get a feel for the hottest products on the market and narrow their decisions down to one or two models. This year’s LA Auto Show offers extensive ride-and-drive opportunities, as the following video clip points out. Besides traditional, combustion vehicles, attendees can view, and test out, some of the newer offerings in the world of green transportation. The LA Auto Show has already carved out a reputation for itself as the premier global event for environmental transportation.

LA Auto Show

For green car enthusiasts, Chevy will finally pull back the veil on the Spark EV and Fiat will debut its anticipated 500e, an electric model based on the classic Fiat 500 architecture. Billed as the first major automotive event of the new model year, the LA Auto Show has more debuts, more green vehicles, and more exhibits, period, than any year in its long history.
Porsche will offer what it calls an “e-hybrid” in 2014, which will be an updated version of the Cayenne SUV featuring advanced styling and technology. The car will be a plug-in, like the current Cayenne hybrid except for a heavier reliance on the electrical propulsion systems. Hoping not only to reduce emissions but also to increase all-electric driving capability, Porsche will add a 100-horsepower electric motor to the mix.

Porsche Cayenne: Video

Always at the forefront of hybrid racing, Porsche brought out the 918 RSR hybrid racecar just a couple of years ago, and the world of competitive driving has never been the same. As is evident in the following video clip, the 918 RSR was not only a work of design artistry but an engineering masterpiece as well. The monster hybrid carries a peak horsepower rating of 767, which is derived from a 563 hp V8 plus two front-wheel-mounted electric motors to pump up the power rating. As if that were not enough, the RSR sports re-gen braking to capture every conceivable iota of energy. Engineering and experimentation like this are the reason Porsche is able to offer some of the most innovative hybrid powertrains on earth. Were it not for Porsche, Toyota, and Audi’s efforts with hybrid technology at the racetrack, today’s passenger cars would not be nearly as advanced as they are.

Porsche Cayenne

By some estimates, the e-hybrid will boast more than 415 horsepower, which is the total output of the V6 combustion engine and the electric motor. The new issue from Porsche will be quite capable as a city car, especially with its modest horsepower, all-electric mode. No word yet on price or charging time.

New data has surfaced about the Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid sports car. Based on unofficial documents, it is being reported in the international press that Porsche has upped the car’s original price from $845,000 to $996,000. That figure applies only to the base model, which can be augmented with a number of add-ons like a luggage set, magnesium wheels, or liquid metal paint.

Porsche 918 Spyder: Video

Rather than watch the umpteenth video clip of the 918 zipping around a track, why not get up close and personal with the car. The following film footage in an artistically assembled collection of detail shots, both exterior and interior, of the Porsche 918. The styling all around is utterly phenomenal. But then again, so is the car’s price. Let’s face it, this vehicle is essentially a spacecraft on wheels. The instrument cluster actually resembles some of the control panels on Apollo modules that went to the moon. In any case, spend two-and-a-half minutes studying the finer points of the 918 and you will be ready to spend your next million on this futuristic hybrid.

Porsche 918 Spyder

With a base price so high, it is not such a shock to learn that the options are quite pricey as well. The liquid metal paint will add about $60,000 to the sticker’s total. Magnesium wheels will set you back an extra $38,000, while the German leather will cost $30,000. The world’s hottest plug-in hybrid, which bowed at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, should see the first round of deliveries early next year. The 918, which can easily reach 100 mph in electric-only mode, will be assembled in Zuffenhausen and will enter the market as a 2014 model.

The duPont Registry’s Exotic Car Buyers Guide has just announced its annual awards in a variety of categories. Of particular interest to green vehicle enthusiasts is the top pick in a section called Best Eco Exotic, which this year went to the Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid supercar. The Ferrari F12 Berlinetta took home overall top honors, winning the trophy for Car of the Year. The Registry’s Exotic car guide is in its eleventh year of dishing out top picks to luxury and exotic vehicles based on style, performance, and design.

Best ‘Eco Exotic’: Video

For some gorgeous on-the-road shots of the 918 Spyder hybrid, check out the video clip below. Some of the footage was taken on the Nordschleife, while most was shot on public roads in and around Nurburg. There are some very loud accelerations as well as several revealing drive-by views. The hybrid supercar is a work of art in action, as the video attests.

Best ‘Eco Exotic’: Nominees

Other notable winners in categories besides Best Eco Exotic included Audi’s S8 picking up the medal for Best Daily Driver, the Ford Shelby GT500 netting the Best Muscle Car title, the Bentley Continental GT/GTC V8 getting the Best Luxury Performance nod, the stunning Lamborghini Urus as Best Concept, Nissan’s GT-R earning the Best Bang for the Buck trophy, and the Rolls-Royce Phantom II Series taking home the Best Ultra Lux award.

Hybrid supercars have truly come into their own during the past decade, with several of the major automakers developing such vehicles, either as racing versions of a hybrid drivetrain or as flat-out concept cars that see lots of closed-track testing.

For the complete list of all the awards presented by the duPont Registry, see the official Exotic Car Buyers Guide at the website below:

Porsche is showing its new Panamera Sport Turismo plug-in hybrid at the Paris Motor Show this week and next. The car’s debut was blunted a bit by the fact that Porsche released a series of photos (see the video below) ahead of the official unveiling of the concept vehicle. In any case, the elite automaker has delivered what automotive media scribes call one of the most beautiful hybrids in existence. Just a concept, but what a concept! The powerful hybrid can travel about 18 miles in pure electric mode at a top speed of 80 mph.

Porsche Hybrid: Video

Stunning photos in a fast-moving montage of the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Concept. You will get every angle, inside and out, of this flashy new concept car from one of the world’s most prestigious automakers. Another entry in the long list of super powerful hybrid vehicles, the Panamera uses a 3.0-liter V6 paired with an electric motor to produce a total 416 horsepower, all of which takes this gorgeous work of art from a standstill up to 60 mph in less than six seconds.

Porsche Plug-ins

Porsche is certainly hinting quite strongly that it intends to take the Panamera line to great heights, and the inclusion of a sport wagon will go a long way toward that end. This is the world debut of Porsche’s plug-in hybrid system as well, never seen anywhere prior to this Paris outing.

Ultra-powerful hybrids have been the talk of the global racing circuit as well as the passenger car concept niche for the past several years. Porsche now enters the segment with what is almost certain to become a hybrid production car, and a plug-in at that. If this is any indication of where the line is headed, how long will we have to wait for an all-electric Panamera?

Soccer fans, as well as Porsche enthusiasts, are still wondering where David Beckham’s Porsche 911 Turbo ended up. Purchased by an anonymous bidder on an Internet auction site, the car was expected to see the light of day on one of the major European auction blocks, but has not appeared as yet. The little gem of a car was an automatic, all-wheel-drive convertible, able to reach 200 mph. Beckham’s wife, former Spice Girl Victoria, owns a white Porsche. The world’s most famous “soccer mom” is not planning to sell it anytime soon. Porsche vehicles are a favorite of those who like to convert sports cars to electric drive, mostly because the chassis is perfectly designed for an EV conversion.

David Beckham’s Porsche: Dragster Challenge

Of all the videotaped car challenges, one that catches the eye of alternative fuel fans everywhere is the dragster challenge between a converted-to-electric Porsche and a Tesla Roadster. Can a remake beat an original? Have a look and find out for yourself.

David Beckham’s Porsche: Giant Price Tag

With bidding starting at $100,000, the Beckham Porsche was no bargain-basement offering. A few hours within placement of the ad, the Beck-mobile sold for a whopping $217,000, which was a full $70,000 more than Mr. B had originally paid for his black-matte, 911 Turbo. The automatic dream car had only 6,700 miles on it at time of auction.

Inside, Beckham had make significant modifications to the vehicle, mostly emblazoning his jersey number, 23, in at least a half-dozen places.

Due to their shape and size, many of the smaller Porsche cars are ideal for electric conversion. In fact, Porsche EVs are one of the most common cars in the electric conversion after-market.

Porsche has officially announced that one of the world’s fastest hybrid cars, its 918 Spyder, is “entering the next phase” of driving trials. The company is putting an intense effort to bring the super-hybrid jewel up to record-breaking speeds on the famous Nurburgring-Nordschleife racetrack. Properly called the 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder, the top-secret speedster has also adopted Martini Racing design and colors (See photo).

Porsche 918 Hybrid: Video

As video clips go, the one below is in a category all by itself, especially if you are a hybrid fan. Porsche unveiled the 918 just two years ago as a concept car at the Geneva Motor Show. The automaker’s first plug-in hybrid is breathtaking. There is no other word to describe its visual impression. The in-house footage below will acquaint you with all the specs, and actually gives a feel for the car’s awesome power.

Porsche 918: Speed

The Spyder is no slouch in the speed department. One might say it owns the speed department. Some unofficial sources claim that it is the fastest hybrid car there is. At a top speed of 202 mph, there certainly are not many hybrids that can keep pace with this wonder car from Porsche.

At its Geneva debut, the 918 was a two-seater. How that pans out by the time the car gets to market in 2014 is anyone’s guess. Fuel economy numbers have been unofficial and variable, but the closest consensus among those who claim to have inside knowledge is 78 mpg. The zero-to-sixty time is three seconds flat, and the gorgeous alternative fuel sports car is able to travel 15 miles on electric power alone. (Which is what makes it perfect for quick trips to the grocery store!)

Seriously, the hybrid drive train is all business: Two electric motors, a 7-speed gearbox, and a 4.6-liter V8 are the essence of this work of automotive art.

For more about all the fast cars made by Porsche, see the company’s official corporate website:

Top-ten lists have been around longer than that old comedian on late-night television, but one of the latest fads is creating top-ten lists that are green-car related. In this case, we are looking at the ten fastest (or most powerful) hybrid cars on earth. That’s saying a lot, because there are some pretty darn fast and powerful hybrids out there.

Hybrid Cars: Video

If you are a fan of hybrids, and like to occasionally go from zero to 60 mph in slightly over three seconds (who doesn’t?), then the Veritas RSIII hybrid is your kind of car. The very brief video link below shows off the RSIII in all its ultra-sporty glory, and there is plenty of glory to spare, no doubt about it.

Hybrid Cars: Speed and Power

At the top of most lists of “quick and powerful hybrid cars” is the Jaguar C-X75 (See photo). With a pure-electric range of 68 miles, the X75 reaches 60 mph in less than three seconds, from a standstill. With a sticker of $1,146,000, the fuel-efficient little Jag can top out at a breathless 205 mph.

Italdesign’s Namir is billed as world’s fastest hybrid, though its 187 mph top speed is a bit shy of the Jag X75. More impressive, due to the huge fuel tank, the Namir can drive 1,200 miles without refueling or recharging, and averages 92 mpg. (See photo)

Number three on the list is the car featured in the video link above, the Veritas RSIII hybrid roadster. Even with a weight of over 2,800 pounds, the car can reach 205 mph. The Veritas has an electric range of 31 miles. Look for an all-electric version of the car next year. Order early to avoid the rush!

Hybrid Cars: Jaguar C-X75

Rounding out the top ten, the following seven cars are all works of art, speed demons, and just fun to look at. Cars are listed with name and other pertinent data.

Porsche Panamera S Hybrid-
Price; $96,000. Top speed; 162 mph.

Infiniti Essence
Even with 434 horsepower, the Essence still gets 30 mpg.

BMW ActiveHybrid 7
With a V8 and 455 horsepower, the Beemer AH7 reaches 60 mph in well under five seconds.

Infiniti M35h
With 360 horsepower and a V6 engine, the M35 hits 60 mph in 5.5 seconds.

Giugiaro Concept
Called the QIWbZ 5965, this concept has a gas-electric motor, hits 60 mph in 4 seconds, and tops out at 186 mph.

BMW Hydrogen hybrid concept
Technically not a hybrid since it is planned to run exclusively on hydrogen power, the Beemer Hydro, as fans call it, will be able to drive at speeds up to 185 mph.

Limelite CoachWorks hybrid limo
On the list solely for its power, not speed, the Limelite hybrid limo is powered by gasoline and lithium batteries. The standard version has two full bars and ultra-comfortable appointments.

One warning: Car companies are famous for “pumping the numbers” on some of their exclusive offerings, so when a car maker claims that a specific model can go x mph, for example, that might mean it achieved the speed one time only, on a test track. As the saying goes, your mph may vary. So before plunking down a million or so for one of the beauties listed above, tell the dealer you want to take the car out to the track and see if it really can drive uphill at 245 mph, or whatever the fine print says.

Seriously, the world of high-end cars has been changing a lot in recent years, thanks to the addition of hybrid and electric offerings. All of which is great, because it means that automakers will now have more of a reason to compete with each other in the categories of “fastest hybrid vehicle,” “fastest EV,” and “fastest CNG car.” It is definitely a win-win situation.
