France: The Peugeot Onyx concept hybrid

Sales of electric and plug-in hybrid cars in France reached well over the 5,000-mark for 2012, racking up an impressive 5,663 unit sales. The total was twice that of the previous year. The re-badged Mitsubishi i-MiEV, which sells in France as the Peugeot iOn, was the biggest seller of the group, with 2,744 units sold. French EV sales are about one-third of Europe’s total, and on a per-capita basis far outrank the U.S., a country with five times the population of France but only twice as many total EV sales.

You have never seen a Peugeot iOn do anything like this. The video clip is testament to the fact that electric cars can do all the same mindless things that other vehicles can do. Standard warning: This footage is actually an expert driver on a closed track. Don’t try it with your car, whether it is and EV or not! Back in 2009, Peugeot announced that its re-badged version of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV would be called iOn and would appear in showrooms by 2010. The car’s first appearance was at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, where Peugeot said that its range would be 80 miles per charge.

France and Plug-ins

Government support for electric and hybrid cars in France is solid, with several different ministries offering incentives for purchases by fleets and private individuals. The country offers national tax incentives, free parking, and various fee reductions for drivers of electric and hybrid vehicles. Indeed, one of the French government’s most powerful ministers, Industrial Renewal chief A. Montebourg, recently expressed his wishes that the country will lead all of Europe in building EV infrastructure. Nissan sold 524 of its Leaf electric cars in France last year, and the automaker expects 2013 to see a significant increase in both French and European sales.

Based largely on the exterior design of the Peugeot Onyx hybrid super-car, the Supertrike, as the new scooter is called, is propelled by a diesel-electric hybrid powertrain. Peugeot is a major player in the two- and three-wheel market, offering a line of 14 bikes, mopeds, and scooters that range in power from 50cc to 500cc.

Officially part of the Onyx concept line, the three-wheel scooter’s proper name is a mouthful: 2013 Peugeot Onyx Concept Scooter Supertrike. A short video compilation of design photos is linked below. Notice the placement of the third wheel. Unlike many motorized and pedaled tricycles, the Onyx puts the double wheel configuration up front, and the trailing, single wheel in back. With the same copper exterior touches as its big brother, the Onyx hybrid car, the Supertrike should draw large crowds at the upcoming Paris Motor Show.

The scooter will be offered in both Urban and Sport Mode, each of which will have a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The 400cc combustion engine is augmented by an electric motor. The reported top speed of the Supertrike is 93 mph.

There is still no official word from Peugeot about the fate of the hybrid scooter, but the oddly configured three-wheeler could conceivably see production within two years or less, depending on what the company’s upper management decides. Plug-in hybrid motorcycles are beginning to see significant sales revenue in the U.S and Europe, as at least a half-dozen manufacturers are already producing electric and hybrid motorcycles for the retail market.

Paris Motor Show: Peugeot Ion EV

Every major auto show tries to keep a few surprises up its sleeve until opening day. In the case of the Paris Motor Show, which opens Sept. 27, Mitsubishi will be supplying at least two welcome sights, namely the Outlander plug-in and the electric Citroen Berlingo (which primarily uses Mitsubishi electric-drive components). The show will also mark the French premiere of the Renault Zoe and the third-gen Smart ED (electric drive).

Paris Motor Show: Video

To get a general feel for the French vehicular gala, both its size and importance, the following video clip will clue you in. Though much of the footage centers around the Bridgestone exhibit, this glimpse from the last Paris show is full of the glamour, excitement, and fun that the event exudes. This year’s installment will feature more green vehicles than ever, as hybrid and electric cars abound in both production and concept models.

Paris Motor Show: Details

Other surprises include at least a trio of super-cars, including a much-anticipated entry from Audi. In addition, Audi will at last reveal the sticker price for the R8 e-tron. Note: Car unveilings are always more beloved than price announcements, especially when the prices are expected to be rather high. Of course, Mercedes-Benz has already ballyhooed its SLS AMG E-Cell, which is looking to be one of the biggest stars in Paris come opening day.

If the SLS does not steal the show, watch for Exagon’s Furtive eGT to turn the most heads, impressing all passersby with its looks as well as its amazing speed. Venturi America will be in attendance too, delivering on a promise to bring its former namesake concept car back as a production model.

Peugeot Onyx hybrid concept

Peugeot’s super-powerful Onyx diesel-hybrid concept car will make its debut at the upcoming Paris Motor Show. Featuring a copper and carbon-fiber body, acrylic windows, and a horsepower rating of 680, the vehicle weighs in at just over 2,400 pounds. The 3.7-liter V8 hybrid is paired with a six-speed gearbox. The Peugeot concept is just the latest entry in what many call the ‘super-hybrid’ category, comprising cars that boast phenomenal horsepower coupled with hybrid drive trains.

Peugeot has not released much official data about the Onyx concept car ahead of the Paris Motor Show, though a few of photos are available in a montage format in the video link below. Other than the very few interior shots, most of the pictures highlight the car’s exterior, which features a pop-up rear spoiler and ultra-sleek styling. Whether any of the current features of the Onyx concept make it to market is pure conjecture. But conjecture and dreaming are what concept cars are all about!

Peugeot in Paris

The doors and fenders of the Onyx are covered with copper sheets, though the rest of the body is composed of carbon fiber. Peugeot’s literature on the car states that copper was specifically chosen as an exterior component because it will change color over time, lending a uniquely different look to each car. The powerful hybrid features a regenerative braking system and a dashboard that is built from recycled newspaper, perhaps taking a cue from Fisker’s recycled driftwood touches.

This year’s Paris Motor Show will feature all the newest designs from the world’s top automakers, as well as full lineup of alternative fuel vehicles and concept cars, like the Onyx.

Peugeot’s 3008 Hybrid4

The enormous Peugeot display at the Moscow International Motor Show this week features the automaker’s hybrid lineup as well as the Peugeot 408, which has just gone on sale in Russia this month. Peugeot operates a manufacturing plant in Kaluga, south of Moscow, where the 408 will be built. Also on display in the gigantic Peugeot pavilion are the 3008 Hybrid4 and the 508 RXH, an elegant pair of diesel hybrids that signal the company’s intention to offer upscale models along with other vehicles.

The 508 RXH Hybrid4 from Peugeot is not usually filmed trying to outrun a pair of racehorses, but in the unusual video clip linked below, you will see just that. It is a rather humorous display of the car’s all-electric drive, as it silently creeps into the stable, then its 4-WD diesel capability, as it shadows two very expensive racehorses who are out for their daily run on a Manchester, England track. If you want to know who wins the dash, keep your eye on the jockey!

Peugeot Hybrids: Facts

The Hybrid4 is so-called because of its four driving modes, automatic, sport, 4WD, and zero emission. Alongside the hybrid duo at the Moscow show, attendees are being treated to a gorgeous concept car, the XH1, which also features a hybrid powertrain, sleek aerodynamics, and plug-in capability.

This year’s Moscow event hosts more than a hundred exhibitors, all of whom are eager to show their wares to a Russian public that is becoming one of the world’s largest automobile markets. Peugeot’s contingent here consists of concept cars as well as 24 production vehicles. The Moscow International Motor Show runs through Sept. 9.
