Mitsubishi will show off two of its newest concept cars at the upcoming Geneva Auto Show in March. The Japanese automaker will bring out a diesel hybrid SUV called GR-HEV, as well as an all-electric concept dubbed CA-MiEV, which can travel 186 miles between charges. Lacking specific powertrain data and marketing schedules, the vehicles appear to be pure concept for the present moment, both being described in official company literature as “next generation.” The limited visual representations of the vehicles point toward early-stage concept designs that will certainly garner plenty of media attention at the Geneva event.

Mitsubishi Concept Cars: Video

The video clip below is a long-form corporate ad for the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. A large, impressive plug-in hybrid, the Outlander offers both power and performance for city or highway driving. With enough computerized controls and settings to satisfy even the most devoted techie, the Outlander plug-in is Mitsubishi’s answer to several other automakers’ entries for this market, notably Ford’s C-Max Energi and Fusion Energi plug-ins. Already on sale in Japan, the vehicle sports a sticker price between $40,000 and $50,000. If and when the Outlander PHEV goes on sale in the U.S., look for prices in the mid-$40,000 range before federal and state incentives, which could knock the sticker price down to the mid-$30,000 neighborhood.

Mitsubishi PHEV Cars

Outlander PHEV will be offered in the U.S. and Europe after spending some time in its domestic debut market of Japan. The plug-in operates a bit differently than some others. It features three modes, one of which is all-electric. Another is a series hybrid mode, and a third is a parallel hybrid mode. In addition, the Outlander has a “battery charge” mode, which uses the gasoline engine to charge the electric battery while driving.

Lease rates for Mitsubishi’s i-MiEV electric car are beginning to decrease, in one case to about $170 per month from an Illinois dealer. Within just a few weeks of Nissan announcing a price reduction for its Leaf EV, the lower rates on electric car lease rates have many consumers wondering whether to buy or lease an EV. Further complicating the equation, the Chevy Volt, a range-extended hybrid, is now offering attractive lease rates as well, as low as $269 per month for the popular, award-winning Chevrolet.

Volt vs. i-MiEV Lease: Video

For a quick look at the Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric car, view the clip below, which features a full Consumer Reports review of the EV. While not directly comparable to the Chevy Volt hybrid, the i-MiEV does offer similar financing arrangements in the form of a lease. People who want a range-extended drivetrain will likely opt for the Volt while those wanting an all-electric car might consider the Mitsubishi EV. Interestingly, the Consumer Reports review points out that the i-MiEV’s range is not that much greater than Volt’s electric-drive range. The huge difference here is that the Volt has a gasoline engine as well.

Volt vs. i-MiEV

Chevy Volt’s $269 lease rate is about $200 less than the typical monthly lease cost for other cars of similar value. GM is subsidizing the cost in order to help market the car, making the Volt lease one of the best deals in the auto market today. In addition, Volt drivers save around $110 per month in gasoline expenses, which means the net cost to drive a leased Volt is approximately $160 per month. (That number does not include federal and state tax incentives, because in lease arrangements, the dealer retains the incentives in order to reduce total cost of the lease).

Japan’s Mitsubishi Motors will begin offering a clean diesel version of the Delica D:5 minivan on Jan. 11. Hoping to sell more than 8,000 of the powerful Delicas, Mitsubishi will also unveil its Outlander plug-in SUV a scant two weeks after the diesel minivan lands in showrooms. It is a busy month for the company, which made news with the recent announcement that its Outlander plug-in can be used as a backup source of electricity for private homes. For the hat trick, Mitsubishi plans to debut a commercial EV in mid-January. That model is called Minicab-MiEV Truck, and for the time being will not be sold in the retail market.

Mitsubishi: Video

Clean diesel is finally starting to catch on in the U.S., though it has been a favorite in Europeand Asia for many years. The short review below features a review of the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle, which offers clean diesel TDI as one of its three engine types. As the narrator points out, the fuel efficiency of the TDI Beetle is by far the best of the bunch, with 28 mpg in the city and 41 on the highway. Aside from the fact that the TDI’s mileage is best in class, the VW Beetle is a perennial favorite, having carved out a loyal niche of repeat buyers.

Mitsubishi Clean Diesel

Mitsubishi began making Delica trucks and MPVs as far back as 1968. In fact, the entire line was named for a small-production pickup the company sold in 1967, which was the first vehicle to carry the Delica name. A little known fact about the line is this: The name Delica is a contraction of sorts for the two words “delivery” and “car.”

Mitsubishi Motors is looking toward a late January launch of its Outlander plug-in hybrid, a four-wheel-drive SUV. With no real competition in the segment from other hybrids, Mitsubishi spokespersons refer to the new model as a game-changer of sorts, being the only crossover that offers the convenience of an EV and the range of a traditional combustion model. A 12-kWh lithium battery unit teams up with a pair of 60-kW electric motors and a 2.0-liter engine to deliver 117 horsepower.

Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In: Video

The Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid was a big hit at this year’s Paris Motor Show. The following short clip provides a summary of the car’s features, with special emphasis on the hybrid drivetrain and related components. For example, the remote control device allows drivers to adjust charging and air-conditioning while away from the vehicle, while twin-motor 4WD makes for safe operation on slippery roadways. For all-electric driving, the Outlander is capable of going 37 miles without using the combustion engine. The clip shows the vehicle from every conceivable angle and has detailed shots of its interior features as well. With CO2 emissions under 49g/kg, the Outlander is a truly environmental drive. Combined range of both gas and electric systems is approximately 550 miles.

Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In

A U.S. price, when the Outlander reaches American shores sometime in 2014, is expected to be in the $40,000 to $50,000 range before federal and state incentives. For now, Mitsubishi is all alone in the SUV plug-in hybrid market. Having made its debut in Paris earlier this year, the vehicle uses a similar electrical system as the one on Mitsubishi’s I-MiEV all-electric car. A U.S. and European rollout is expected to follow the Outlander plug-in debut in Japan.

Mitsubishi will finally reveal its Outlander plug-in hybrid this month at the Paris Auto Show, which runs from Sept. 27 through Oct. 14. Officially called the Outlander PHEV, Mitsubishi’s literature on the new model boasts that it is the first plug-in hybrid SUV on earth that has, “the cruising range of a conventional internal combustion engine vehicle, and the on- and off-road performance of an SUV.”

Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid: Video

For some exciting film of an early version of what would become the Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in, see the video link below. Taped live at a recent auto show, the clip centers on the hybrid plug-in, as well as a few other innovations from the big Japanese automaker.

Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid: Details

The vehicle’s 2-liter, 4-cylinder engine is teamed up with two electric motors, which are powered by a lithium battery pack to the tune of 12 kWh. Each axle features its own electric motor. The electric systems in the SUV are direct offspring of the company’s smaller electric car, the i-MiEV. Driving on electric power alone, the big SUV can amble along for up to 34 miles, though the Outlander plug-in offers series hybrid mode and parallel hybrid mode as well.

The Outlander PHEV will feature a combined, equivalent fuel efficiency of approximately 143 mpg, with an impressive total range, using gas and electricity, of almost 550 miles. Mitsubishi joins many of the world’s other automakers in bringing out a larger hybrid-drive vehicle. When manufacturers first began offering electric and hybrid drive trains, it was on smaller vehicles like the Toyota Prius and Nissan Leaf. As demand for fuel economy has grown, most every major carmaker now offers either a luxury hybrid or SUV version of their existing models.

For more about Mitsubishi’s complete lineup of cars, trucks, and SUVs, see the automaker’s official corporate website:

In the most recent Pikes Peak International Hill Climb race, three electric cars finished in the top 15. Some of the EV entrants included Toyota Motorsports Group, Mitsubishi, and Michael Bream of EV West. The event was held last weekend rather than in July because of the Colorado wildfires.

Pikes Peak Hill Climb: Video

You can read thousands of words about the Pikes Peak Hill Climb and never really appreciate the steep, winding course for what it actually is. The following video clip delivers a driver’s-view perspective of the entire climb, complete with all the twists and breathtaking scenery.

Pikes Peak Hill Climb: Winners

The top two overall winners were Rhys Millen, who drove a Hyundai chassis, with a time of 9 minutes and 46 seconds, and Romain Dumas in his Porsche with a time of 9:46. Electric finisher Fumio Nutahara drove a Toyota Motorsports Group EV P002 race car and was the first finisher among EV entrants. The car’s predicted top speed is 150 mph. In the race, his average speed was 70.2 mph, which brought him to the finish line in ten minutes and 15 seconds for an overall placement of sixth.

Veteran driver Hiroshi Masuoka was close on Nutahara’s heels in his Mitusbishi i-MiEV Evolution at ten minutes and 30 seconds. His average speed was 68 mph, which earned him eighth place overall. Despite a car crash during his practice run, Masuoka’s team quickly rebuilt the car’s entire front end and delivered a solid effort.

The third EV to place was Elias Anderson’s NovaKar with a lap time of 11 minutes flat. The NovaKar is designed after Jim Novak’s F600, complete with a 240-horse power electric motor.
