Many attendees and athletes at the Olympic Games in London are surprised to see miniaturized versions of BMW’s MINI E out and about, oftentimes right on the field of play. The miniscule electric cars are actually radio-controlled devices that dash out during track events and retrieve things like javelins, hammers, and discuses. The robotic EVs are officially called Mini MINI’s, and each is built to one-quarter scale of a normal-sized MINI car.

Not content with compact and sub-compact cars, he set out on a quest to make a vehicle even smaller than some of the tiniest production models in existence. His so-called “wind-up” car looks like a toy, but as you can see in the clip, it is indeed the real thing.

Olympic Mini Cars: Facts

Each one of the Mini MINI’s carries track equipment back and forth between athletes and the field. In prior games, the duty of bringing back javelins and other gear was handled by event officials, who were sometimes put in harm’s way when a stray shot-put, javelin, or discus came flying their way.

Besides the safety aspect, designers of the micro-cars said that it will be a good use of robotic technology to reduce the danger to humans and make track events more fun. There has even been talk among coaches about bringing such devices back to the practice arenas at home. University track and tennis teams could make creative use of the tiny, rolling robots. BMW is an official Automotive Partner for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games this year.
