McLaren P1 hybrid supercar

McLaren Automotive tested its upcoming P1 hybrid super car on barren swaths of the Arctic Circle in north Sweden. In the rarefied air of ultra-costly car sales, the McLaren will face off against several other heavy-hitting elites, like the recently unveiled LaFerrari and Porsche’s unique 918 Spyder. Boasting 664 pound-feet of torque, a limited top speed of nearly 220 mph, and a breathtaking total 903 horsepower, the P1 is worth every penny of its $1,150,000 sticker price.

McLaren P1 Freeze Drive

McLaren Automotive is putting the final touches on its one-and-only batch of P1 super cars for 375 lucky customers. The company promises the car will be “the best driver’s car in the world on road and track,” so expectations are high. The short video clip above is exciting footage of the super hybrid being run through some tests in icy conditions. Considering the stratospheric price tag of the P1, don’t feel out of place being a bit nervous watching the test car almost lose its footing a couple of times on that lonesome Arctic track. At least there were no other vehicles around to bump into!

McLaren P1 Hybrid

The P1 hybrid gets to 60 mph in less than three seconds. The automotive work of art made its debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, and borrows style cues from the McLaren MP4-12C as well as the McLaren F1. Some keen-eyed observers have noted that the car’s headlights replicate the company’s logo. The two-door coupe is being assembled in Surrey, England. It features a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission and a twin-turbo, 3.8-liter V8 engine. The combustion powertrain is mated to a 176-horsepower KERS electric motor that is capable of taking the P1 12 miles on nothing but electric propulsion. In all-electric mode, the car tops out at just 30 mph, a far cry from its actual speed capacity of 239 mph. Alas, that speed is electronically limited to a more modest 217 mph for production purposes.

When McLaren’s P1 makes its debut at the Geneva Auto Show next week, spectators will already know some key facts about the super-hybrid, namely that its asking price will be a cool $1.15 million once it lands in U.S. showrooms.

As the camera moves around the vehicle, you might notice that the photo taken directly above the P1 almost looks like an airplane rather than a car. Perhaps that was the designer’s intent. In any case, the P1 is a unique work of automotive art from any angle. Competitors will likely copy the car’s front and rear fascia for years to come.

Those interested in purchasing what will undoubtedly be the most powerful production hybrid car on earth had better line up now. McLaren Automotive has announced that only 375 units will be manufactured. Buyers will also need to pay a destination charge on top of the base price. The company has limited the 903-horsepower monster to top out at a modest 218 mph. Zero to 60 mph is achieved in a mere 3 seconds. Speed enthusiasts will appreciate that the P1 is able to reach 124 mph in only 7 seconds. Even with the super-sized price of the super-car, experts predict that the entire production run will be sold out.

McLaren P1 Goes Hybrid

One of the planet’s most powerful hybrid automobiles will debut at the Geneva Auto Show in March. The McLaren P1 will offer a 903-horsepower engine system and 663 foot-pounds of torque. The plug-in hybrid successor to the F1 comes with a charging unit that can re-up the battery pack in just two hours. The mid-engine V8 twin-turbo is actually a reworked M838T teamed with an electric motor. The rear-wheel-drive P1 boasts a featherweight, 212-pound battery on the underside of its carbon-fiber chassis. Exact pricing and fuel economy data are currently unavailable, but a million-dollar price tag would not be unreasonable.

The P1 concept that made its debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show may well make it to the production line fully intact, or close to it. The most recent spy shots of the car (see video) reveal a fire-breathing monster that is the epitome of power. This is the follow-up to the company’s F1. Some attentive fans claim to see the McLaren logo in the headlight design. With a sticker price that will likely weigh in at slightly over $1,000,000, the production P1 is said to be limited to 500 total units. The mid-engine car uses carbon fiber components to reduce weight, and features the automaker’s unique “safety cage” design concept, also known as the MonoCage. While mph max numbers are hard to pin down, it has been rumored that the P1 would have a top speed of approximately 240 mph, though production models will almost certainly be acceleration-governed.

One of the few confirmed facts about the car is its all-electric range, which stands at six miles. Officials are expected to announce all pertinent spec data during the unveiling at the Geneva show.
