Indian electric vehicle manufacturer Mahindra is planning to create a larger EV for worldwide sales, according to company spokespersons. Mahindra has already begun building the new, larger platform that will be used for the more powerful electric cars. The Indian automaker has turned to SsangYong of Korea as a partner in the construction of the new drivetrains, hoping to offer the fresh-faced EVs for sale in 2014. The model, an entry-level sedan, will be an electrified version of Mahindra’s Verito (see photo).

Boasting a 62-miles-per-charge range and a top speed of approximately 65 mph, the latest version of the Reva EV surpasses its predecessor in virtually all respects. Mahindra acquired Reva Electric Car Company in 2010. Now a subsidiary of Mahindra, Reva has sold upwards of 4,000 electric vehicles. M&M was named one of the world’s 50 most innovative companies in 2013, tying at number 22 in the rankings with electric carmaker Tesla Motors. Mahindra’s stock is listed on the Bombay Exchange.

Public attitudes toward electric cars are one of the most analyzed components of consumer behavior. The generous amount of media coverage notwithstanding, large numbers of car buyers are still surprised by basic facts about electric cars. One recent study found that a majority of consumers were unaware of the following EV factoids:

• Electric cars are much more efficient than combustion vehicles, with EVs using about 80 percent of the motor’s power to propel the car, as opposed to a combustion engine’s 20 percent efficiency.

• The cost of lithium-ion battery packs is expected to drop almost 40 percent by 2015.

Most U.S. consumers are familiar with the handful of electric cars for sale in auto showrooms, but how many are as acquainted with Mahindra’s e2o? (See video clip above). It is a tiny EV produced by an Indian manufacturer and retails for a tad under $13,000 before rebates and incentives. For now, the diminutive e2o, formerly known as REVA NXR, is only on sale in India, with plans to unleash its awesome smallness on European shores in late 2013.

The e2o charges up in about five hours, tops out at 50 mph, and offers a 62-mile range. For a small EV, the e2o is quite the high-tech wonder, featuring keyless entry, regen braking, GPS nav system, a touchscreen, and assorted smartphone-directed functions. Mahindra manufactures the e2o in its Bangalore facility.

More EV Facts

• On average, drivers of electric cars save approximately $1,000 per year in fuel costs.

• While the majority of EV owners recharge their batteries at home, the number of public charging stations is growing at an exponential rate.

• Besides tires and wiper blades, electric cars need very little upkeep compared to their combustion cousins. In fact, one of the major cost savings for EV owners is due to lower maintenance expenses.
