Lincoln’s MKC concept, on display at the Detroit Auto Show this week and next, shows off a smaller, more refined version of Ford’s Lincoln crossover. Making elegance a key component of every aspect of the MKC’s look, there is no official word on whether the vehicle will end up with a hybrid powertrain. Ford Motor Co.’s Fusion and C-Max hybrids are the only comparable propulsion systems that could end up in the MKC, but the automaker is simply not offering any data on that topic for now.

Lincoln MKC Concept: Video

If you are a Lincoln enthusiast, you will certainly enjoy the unveiling of the MKC Concept, with its unique, smooth design and trendy yet understated appearance. Virtually every design component has been redone for the MKC, from the side-view cut-line to the frameless windows and panoramic roof, which happens to cover the entire length of the vehicle. Complete with 20-inch chrome wheels, the MKC also features plenty of leather on the interior. The tail lamps run completely across the rear of the vehicle and contribute to the overall look of refinement and luxury.

Lincoln MKC Concept

Most insiders are saying that the MKC, which is largely based upon the Ford Escape, will appear in showrooms by 2015 or earlier. The full-length sunroof, black wood, and a generous array of leather make for an open-air feel in the MKC’s interior. Taking a cue from Tesla Motors perhaps, the Lincoln concept features a push-button gearshift as well as a touch screen control panel. A totally new design for Lincoln, the LED tail lights, split grille, and overall compact architecture make for an inviting, handsome crossover. This is what concept car design is all about.

For more about the Lincoln MKC concept see the company’s dedicated page for the vehicle, complete with high-definition photos and plenty of details:

A recent study by research company Vincentric named the Lincoln MKZ, Mercedes-Benz S400, and the Lexus HS 250h as the three most cost-efficient hybrid vehicles sold in the U.S. The study looked at the premium that buyers pay up front, compared to lower fuel and cost of ownership items over a five-year period. Surprisingly, owners of hybrid vehicles enjoy cost savings in many other categories besides fuel expenses. The Lincoln MKZ hybrid, for example, topped the list, with a cost savings of $7,001 over a non-hybrid model of the same car.

Cost Effective Hybrids: Video

For an up close and personal preview of the 2013 Lincoln MKZ hybrid, watch the brief video clip that follows. Silently, you will be taken on an exterior and interior tour of the stunning, luxurious hybrid, which happens to be offered in three separate powertrain varieties. Pick from the EcoBoost model that offers a 20 percent improvement in fuel economy over its 2012 iteration. If you prefer the V6, a 3.7-liter MKZ still outperforms its 2012 sibling in the fuel economy department by 5 percent. Finally, the 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder hybrid delivers top-level fuel frugality with a whopping 41 city and 36 highway rating. Available all-wheel-drive adjusts power instantaneously.

Cost Effective Hybrids

Second on the list for cost-efficiency was the Mercedes-Benz S400, which saves its owners $4,242 over the cost of a conventional S550 Mercedes-Benz. The bronze medal, third-place, in the survey went to the Lexus HS 250h, which showed a savings of $3,747 over a five-year period. Some of the other ownership costs that were factored into the study included financing, maintenance, insurance, depreciation, fees, taxes, and repairs. For the models listed, hybrids saved many thousands of dollars for their owners.

Ford Motor Co. announced this week that its new MKZ hybrid is now officially certified by the EPA at 45 mpg combined. Edging out its closest rivals by single digits, Ford can now claim the fuel efficiency crown over the BMW ActiveHybrid 3, the Infinity M35h, and the Lexus ES 300h. The fresh iteration of MKZ is part of the company’s dedicated effort to re-invent the Lincoln brand. Within the next two years, Ford will be introducing another half-dozen fresh Lincoln vehicles, all long on fuel economy, luxury, and eye-catching design.

Lincoln MKZ Hybrid: Video

Putting aside the advantages of a hybrid drivetrain, take a look at the video clip below and notice, about halfway through, the unique panoramic retractable roof. It is one of the widest on any sedan in the industry. This is the first vehicle designed by the team at the Lincoln Design Studio. The overall aerodynamics are much improved even when compared to the concept version. But of all the new flourishes, as one reviewer noted, “The roof is the icing on the cake.”

Lincoln MKZ Hybrid

Similar in many respects to its cousins, the Ford Fusion and Fusion hybrid, the MKZ features a sticker price starting at $36,800. Ford is using a marketing strategy with the 2013 MKZ that has already worked in the past by selling the car without premium pricing. That way, buyers can pick up a hybrid Lincoln for the same base price as the 2-liter EcoBoost version.

Ford data shows that more than 70 percent of MKZ buyers are switchover customers from other brands. That sort of brand capture is almost unheard of in the auto industry, and Ford knows it. That’s why the company put so much effort into the makeover, and is selling the hybrid MKZ at what amounts to an out-the-door discount of two- or three-thousand dollars. MKZ’s buyers have been gold for Ford, and the company is repaying the favor with the 2013 hybrid model.

The 2012 MKZ Hybrid from Lincoln is a whole new class of hybrid. With this vehicle, we’re not talking about something totally “new age” or outlandish. Just pure, unadulterated class, taking advantage of contemporary technology.

The Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, in previous models, already has begun to fill a very specific niche. The MKZ is a luxury sedan that offers the best of luxury with hybrid economy that doesn’t compromise.

The MKZ is more compact than other luxury sedans, and resultantly offers tighter handling and smaller dimensions. The hybrid gets a whopping 41 miles per gallon in the city and 36 on the highway. With a starting price of $34,645, it is definitely competitive in its class!

The gasoline-half of the propulsion system features a 263 horsepower V-6 engine. This vehicle comes standard with heated or cooled front seats and has an option blind spot warning system with a backup camera.

New in the 2012 model, you can get the MKZ Hybrid with front wheel drive or all wheel drive (last year you couldn’t get the all-wheel drive on the hybrid version of the MKZ).

The most interesting thing I find about this vehicle is that Lincoln has managed to produce a car that’s more efficient in the city than on the highway. While this isn’t the first time this has ever happened, I find it notable as the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid is quite the luxury vehicle and I haven’t seen such profound numbers before.

Get this: that 36 miles per gallon on the highway translates to a range of about 630 miles between fill ups and charges. When you drive in the city, your EPA estimated rating of 41 miles per gallon translates to 717.5 miles of range. If you think about it, that means you could drive around Central Park in New York City, New York, a whopping 115 times between charges and fill-ups. Now I’m not saying that you’d necessarily WANT to do that, but my point is, in the 2012 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, you COULD and you could do it with some serious class.

There was a big surprise in this year’s American Customer Satisfaction Index. Overall owner satisfaction with vehicles tied a twenty-year high, with the auto industry garnering a rating of 84 out of 100 total points. The higher the number, the more satisfied a person is with a particular car. The ACSI, unlike the similar J.D. Power and Associates measurements, tracks customer satisfaction for three years after the initial purchase. J.D.’s APPEAL study only tracks the first 90 days of owner satisfaction. Some say the longer evaluation period of the ACSI survey makes it much more reliable and valid, since car owners tend to know more about their vehicles after a few years of driving.

Lincoln, Lexus: Video

Speaking of Lexus, if you have not seen the long-form ad for the new Lexus GS Hybrid, then you have definitely missed out on one of the funnier auto advertisements. After strapping a few “regular people” into the new hybrid, a professional driver takes them for a spin at rather high speeds. The goal is for the passenger to keep his or her heart rate below 120 beats per minute. Of course, it’s all in fun, but you get a chance to see the hot new hybrid zipping around at a breathtaking pace.

As for the survey, Ford’s Lincoln was tops with a 90-point rating, while Lexus was behind by a mere point, with an 89 rating.

Lincoln, Lexus: Survey Toppers

Jeep brand came from last year’s 79 up to this year’s respectable 83 rating, while Dodge moved up a bit, from 79 to 81. Subaru and Buick each earned 87, while BMW notched an 86. After that, there was a four-way tie, with Toyota, VW, Hyundai, and Mercedes-Benz all achieving a rating of 85.
