Range Rover Sport Hybrid

The upcoming Frankfurt Auto Show will feature the debut of a diesel hybrid Range Rover as well as the Range Rover Sport Hybrid. In order to maintain the vehicles’ spacious interiors, both will carry under-floor battery packs. All indications from company spokespersons point to generator placement being midway between the combustion engine and transmission. So far, there has been no official decision about selling the new vehicles in the U.S. market.

Though the RR Sport Hybrid will not be unveiled until the Frankfurt Auto Show, Shanghai’s event featured its share of surprises from the RR team. The company is preparing a four-cylinder version of the car as well as the diesel hybrid for Frankfurt. According to Land Rover officials, the hybrid will boast a fuel efficiency rating in the 44 mpg range. Most of RR’s newer engines carry an eight-speed box, regen braking, and stop-start technology. All the new features contribute to a smaller carbon footprint.

The pedigree of the Range Rover can get a bit complicated. The vehicle is produced by the British company Land Rover, which itself is part of the Jaguar Land Rover grouping under overall corporate ownership of global auto giant Tata Motors. Because Land Rover has invested so heavily in Range Rover’s name and technology, many consumers mistakenly use the names interchangeably.

Diesel hybrid vehicles have become very popular in Europe and Asia during the past decade, though only now are beginning to gain sales traction in the U.S. Some industry analysts believe that the Range Rover Sport Hybrid could make its way to American showrooms if sales in Europe prove to be strong.

Land Rover’s Range Rover lineup will offer hybrid diesel

The fourth-generation Land Rover Range Rover SUV will officially debut at this month’s Paris Auto Show, even though the carmaker has already divulged an entire checklist of specs for the new vehicle. A 3.0-liter V6 engine teams up with an electric motor for the first-ever hybrid Range Rover. The new issue will get 37 mpg, though the plug-in version, which is planned for the near future, will do even better than that.

As a matter of fact, the entire new lineup was revealed this week at the Royal Ballet School in London, where plenty of celebrities were on hand to add star power to the festivities. The newest hybrid is just one of the automaker’s splashy new debuts that will get more airtime at the upcoming Paris auto show.

A larger, quieter interior is one of the hallmarks of the new Land Rover. Engineers and designers pulled out all the stops, so to speak, in order to cut down on ambient noise. The windows, for example, are specially laminated to screen out sound, and the vehicle’s exterior has undergone an array of design tweaks to create plenty of quiet on the inside.

However, if it is sound you want, then sound you will get. The new Range Rover offers up to 29 speakers in its audio system. Other touches, like the sliding roof and four-zone climate control, are just a sampling of the Rover’s impressive features. The diesel-electric hybrid will not, for now anyway, be available in the U.S.
