KleenSpeed’s EV-X11 green racer

KleenSpeed Technologies, Inc., and Korea’s Leo Motors will work together under a recently signed international sales agreement. According to the text of the arrangement, Leo and KleenSpeed will market each other’s products in both the U.S. and Asia. The companies hope to expand global markets for energy storage and electric transportation technology. KleenSpeed, based in California, has been in business since 2007, developing electric racing vehicles and systems. NASA’s Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif. is the company’s home base. Its most famous projects to date are the EV-X11 electric racer, and the KAR, aka KleenSpeed Advanced Research vehicle.

See the short video clip below for some startling footage of KleenSpeed’s EV-X11 electric racecar in action at Sonoma, where it set an EV speed record. While the average speed during the attempt was a tame 93 mph, the car’s top speed reached 130 mph, which seems even faster due to the hood-mounted camera. It is an amazing testament to the power of electric cars, and to their silence, even on the track at high speeds. The video features some stomach-turning shots, so be sure to hang on to your chair.

KleenSpeed and Leo Motors

Leo Motors is based just outside the Seoul, Korea, metropolis. The company manufactures and sells a wide variety of components and powertrains for electric vehicles. Registered as a public U.S. corporation, the company has done multiple specialized conversions of combustion vehicles. Leo Motors’ experience with conversions includes work with scooters, buses, trucks, passenger cars, and motorcycles. The Korean-based company has also come up with a zinc-air, fuel-cell generator (ZAFCG), which has the potential to extend the range of electric vehicles.

KleenSpeed KAR was unveiled this week

KleenSpeed CEO, Tim Collins, took the wraps off the company’s newest creation, the KAR electric vehicle, at the San Francisco Auto Show on Nov. 21. Having brought the product to this point, KleenSpeed is open to interested manufacturers who wish to produce the prototype as a passenger car. The diminutive 2-seater sports a small suggested price tag of $9,995 and boasts 150 miles per charge. So far, the pairing of a modest price and generous range has not been offered by any carmaker. One way the price is kept so low is with a leased battery pack, which by most estimates would be approximately $175 per month.

KleenSpeed KAR EV: Soon to be uncovered

KleenSpeed, an EV component manufacturer based in Silicon Valley, will introduce a concept electric car, called KAR, which carries a price under $10,000 and a per-charge range of 150 miles. The only downside is that the vehicle is not yet in production. A few specs are already public knowledge, but much more will be released by the company at the San Francisco Auto Show this week. KleenSpeed made a name for itself with its futuristic-looking race car, the EV-X11, which acts as a rolling laboratory for the company to design the lithium battery packs and battery management systems that it sells to the industry. KleenSpeed’s flagship product is the GenESSys battery pack.

According to KleenSpeed, the design for the KAR can be licensed by manufacturers. The company believes that the KAR GT is a realistic “vision of the automobile that will revolutionize the acceptance and commercial viability of the electric vehicle.” Based on the price and the range alone, that statement makes perfect sense!

The KleenSpeed MAX System currently under development and testing for the KAR Platform is designed to offer stimulating performance and remarkable efficiency and range. Final specifications have not been set, but prototypes feature a KleenSpeed Energy Storage system featuring 40kWh of energy delivered through a KleenSpeed Controller to a 100 kW/134 HP electric motor with 221 lb ft of torque. Performance goals for the MAX EV System are a real world range of 120-140 miles per charge with true sports car performance.

KleenSpeed has forged a relationship with an electric vehicle manufacturer in China. The KleenSpeed KAR VX-1 will adapt the MAX EV System to a modified version of a recently developed small car EV currently being built and sold in China with the Chinese manufacturer’s own basic EV system based on lead-acid battery technology. This combination of a modern, stylish mini car body and interior with a state-of-the-art KleenSpeed EV Platform will be ready for public unveiling and road testing in early 2012. Market target for the KleenSpeed VX-1 is a retail price in the $30K range in the US. The KAR Platform will also integrate into many other model configurations offered by our manufacturing partner, such as 4 passenger sedans, small trucks and vans for sale in global markets.

KleenSpeed’s design team is now at work on the concepts for the second generation KAR VX-2, to feature the next evolution of the MAX EV System and KAR Platform integrated into a brand new, clean sheet design, 2 passenger automobile offering new levels of sophistication, performance and futuristic style. The body and interior of the KAR VX-2 will be manufactured by our partner in China, then fitted with the KleenSpeed KAR Platform for sale into US and global markets beginning in 2014. The KleenSpeed KAR VX-2 will realize our passionate vision of an exciting, affordable, green, global car of the future, here in 2014.

All versions of the KAR will provide the efficiency, aerodynamics, performance and handling that has made the KleenSpeed EV-X11 the world’s fastest EV track racing car in the world as of July 2011.
