Infiniti QX60 hybrid crossover

Infiniti’s QX60 crossover hybrid was unveiled at the New York Auto Show this week. The seven-passenger vehicle features a 15 kW electric motor, a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine and a lithium battery pack. The hybrid crossover is designed in such a way that it offers the same amount of interior and storage space as its non-hybrid cousin. Torque and horsepower differences between the hybrid and combustion models are negligible, with the gasoline vehicle coming out on top by just five pound-feet and 15 horses overall. The hybrid’s specs stand at 250 horsepower and 243 lb-ft or torque.

For a thorough vetting of the QX60 hybrid, see the video clip above. A continuously variable transmission plus a choice of all-wheel or front-wheel drive will be offered on the QX60. Infiniti has not announced specific pricing data but did say that the new hybrid would likely carry a sticker of approximately $45,000, which is $3,000 more than the combustion model. Infiniti is a subsidiary of Nissan, and has produced high-end automobiles since 1989.

Infiniti’s Emerg-e hybrid concept car is another product of the Japanese automaker, having wowed crowds at auto shows and special events since its creation. The hybrid plug-in has a 30-mile electric range before the combustion engine begins to recharge the battery pack. With the ability to reach 60 mph in just four seconds, the sporty hybrid was first shown to the world at the Geneva Motor Show last year. Breaking from the traditional mold of hybrid design, the Emerg-e features a pair of electric motors, one for each rear wheel. Infiniti officials say the car might never land in showrooms but as a prototype is bound to influence various other models that roll off the Japanese carmaker’s line.

Infiniti cordless LE, interior

Infiniti plans to offer a “cordless plug-in” electric car in 2014, to be called the LE. This makes Infiniti the only major carmaker so far to name the specific year in which it will launch an electric car with cordless charging capability. Home charging systems for the LE will allow drivers to park over a special plate that will send electricity through the air and into the car’s batteries. Each LE will retain sockets and cables for plugging in at public stations.

Infiniti Cordless: Facts

Infiniti is showcasing many of its new vehicles at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance this week, including the Emerg-e plug-in car. Although several major car companies have had inductive charging on the drawing board, Infiniti is the first to take the plunge. Worlds ahead of the Nissan Leaf in terms of luxury, style and price, the Infiniti (a Nissan subsidiary) LE is closely related to the smaller electric car, sporting the same drive train.

Between now and 2014, Infiniti will work on a more powerful battery pack for the LE in hopes that it can advertise a greater range than the current 80 miles of the Leaf. In a complicated marketing strategy, the new all-electric luxury car hopes to knock off the Toyota Prius as the second-car-of-choice for well-heeled buyers. Since most Prius drivers own two cars, the Infiniti LE is looking to become the second vehicle parked in the garages of green-minded consumers.

Hybrid Cars: Italdesign’s Namir

Top-ten lists have been around longer than that old comedian on late-night television, but one of the latest fads is creating top-ten lists that are green-car related. In this case, we are looking at the ten fastest (or most powerful) hybrid cars on earth. That’s saying a lot, because there are some pretty darn fast and powerful hybrids out there.

Hybrid Cars: Video

If you are a fan of hybrids, and like to occasionally go from zero to 60 mph in slightly over three seconds (who doesn’t?), then the Veritas RSIII hybrid is your kind of car. The very brief video link below shows off the RSIII in all its ultra-sporty glory, and there is plenty of glory to spare, no doubt about it.

Hybrid Cars: Speed and Power

At the top of most lists of “quick and powerful hybrid cars” is the Jaguar C-X75 (See photo). With a pure-electric range of 68 miles, the X75 reaches 60 mph in less than three seconds, from a standstill. With a sticker of $1,146,000, the fuel-efficient little Jag can top out at a breathless 205 mph.

Italdesign’s Namir is billed as world’s fastest hybrid, though its 187 mph top speed is a bit shy of the Jag X75. More impressive, due to the huge fuel tank, the Namir can drive 1,200 miles without refueling or recharging, and averages 92 mpg. (See photo)

Number three on the list is the car featured in the video link above, the Veritas RSIII hybrid roadster. Even with a weight of over 2,800 pounds, the car can reach 205 mph. The Veritas has an electric range of 31 miles. Look for an all-electric version of the car next year. Order early to avoid the rush!

Infiniti Essence
Even with 434 horsepower, the Essence still gets 30 mpg.

BMW ActiveHybrid 7
With a V8 and 455 horsepower, the Beemer AH7 reaches 60 mph in well under five seconds.

Infiniti M35h
With 360 horsepower and a V6 engine, the M35 hits 60 mph in 5.5 seconds.

Giugiaro Concept
Called the QIWbZ 5965, this concept has a gas-electric motor, hits 60 mph in 4 seconds, and tops out at 186 mph.

BMW Hydrogen hybrid concept
Technically not a hybrid since it is planned to run exclusively on hydrogen power, the Beemer Hydro, as fans call it, will be able to drive at speeds up to 185 mph.

Limelite CoachWorks hybrid limo
On the list solely for its power, not speed, the Limelite hybrid limo is powered by gasoline and lithium batteries. The standard version has two full bars and ultra-comfortable appointments.

One warning: Car companies are famous for “pumping the numbers” on some of their exclusive offerings, so when a car maker claims that a specific model can go x mph, for example, that might mean it achieved the speed one time only, on a test track. As the saying goes, your mph may vary. So before plunking down a million or so for one of the beauties listed above, tell the dealer you want to take the car out to the track and see if it really can drive uphill at 245 mph, or whatever the fine print says.

Seriously, the world of high-end cars has been changing a lot in recent years, thanks to the addition of hybrid and electric offerings. All of which is great, because it means that automakers will now have more of a reason to compete with each other in the categories of “fastest hybrid vehicle,” “fastest EV,” and “fastest CNG car.” It is definitely a win-win situation.
