Justin Bieber covered his Fisker with chrome

When you drive a chrome-plated Fisker Karma around the streets of California, it is hard to not be noticed. Unfortunately, for singing star Justin Bieber, the police can spot the shiny Fisker a mile away, so speeding is out of the question. That is, unless you want to get caught in a millisecond. Bieber was pulled over this week while trying to elude a group of photographers who, he claims, were chasing him.

Right now, at least one witness says that the pint-sized entertainer was traveling in excess of 100 mph, which the Karma can indeed reach without batting an eye. An L.A. city councilman called 911 when he saw the speeding car, and an investigation is now underway.

This is not Justin’s first run-in with traffic cops either. He has been pulled over numerous times in his Cadillac CTS-V “Batmobile” for various infractions on the road. Of course, Fisker has no control over celebrities who purchase their cars and use them unwisely.

Bieber’s Fisker Karma is not the usual fare, having been chromed soon after he received it as a birthday gift. The opulent work of art was not only completely covered in chrome, but decked out with an odd set of LED lights and huge black wheels. Some Fisker fans decried the young pop star’s tweaks to the otherwise sleekly beautiful car, one of the world’s loveliest hybrid-drive automobiles.

Fisker Karma: Even the back seat is a work of art

One eagle-eyed automotive reviewer pointed out that everything Bieber has done to his Karma is completely legal, but definitely breaks all the commandments of good taste. Even at that, the chrome Fisker has a certain glow. Or is that just the blinding reflection of the sun?

Inspiration for Batmobile: 1955 Ford Futura

The story of the original Batmobile is one of automotive history’s truly fascinating tales. And like all historical legends, there are competing versions. Purists tend to give credit for the car’s basis to designers of the Ford Futura, while Batman fans (and there are millions of them) point to George Barris, who modified a Futura for the Batman television show.

Whichever camp you are in, there is no dispute that the Batmobile, as Barris says in the video clip below, is perhaps the most famous car in the world. Its launch to Bat-fame began sometime in 1966, a few weeks before the show was to air. No one at that time had any idea how famous the show, or the Batmobile, would become. As you listen to Barris in the video clip, pay close attention to all the features he added to the car. An off-the-shelf Ford Futura would not have sufficed for the Batmobile. Mr. Barris certainly deserves the lion’s share of the credit for what followed.

Armed with not much more than a few prospective scripts and general ideas about the show, Barris decided to customize the Ford Futura into a crime-fighting, crusading, car of the future. It was complete with an “oil spiller,” ejection seats, parachutes, a nail-dropping mechanism to deter followers, plus an unheard of luxury at the time, a car-phone, which would ride into history as, “the Bat-phone.” (Apparently no one thought of Bat-texting as a driving hazard of the future).

There have been many famous TV, and movie, cars since the Batmobile, like Knight Rider’s ride, James Bond‘s many specialized cars, and the Munster mobile. However, the Batmobile reigns supreme, not only because it captured our imaginations, but also because it was just realistic enough to seem like it could happen. Every 8-year-old in 1966 dreamed of someday owning a replica of the world‘s coolest car, the Batmobile. Holy Hot-rods, Batman!

Will Driverless Cars Rule the Road?

No driver, but plenty of power

While all the analysts are trying to decide how quickly electric and hybrid cars will become part of the national scenery, driverless cars are quietly slipping into the U.S. auto population, and might just be the surprise story of the decade. Google has already made the driverless car a commonplace idea, if not a common site.

The interesting little piece of film, linked below, shows the agile and human-like way that driverless cars operate. In fact, the autonomous vehicles do a much better job than many human operators we know, present company excepted. Seriously, the autonomous vehicles, as they are properly called, might fill a necessary niche in the fabric of society, according to anthropologists who specialize in such predictions.

Those in the know held the first Driverless Car Summit in Detroit last week, and the consensus seems to be that we are at least a decade or two away from driverless technology reaching the mainstream. But make no mistake, attendees of the summit said that the impact on the human race will be significant. Where we live, how we travel, and how people interact, will all be affected by autonomous vehicles. Just last year, a Florida man became the first blind person to legally drive, as he tooled around the Daytona Speedway in a Ford Escape autonomous car.

All seriousness aside, don’t you already feel sorry for that first traffic cop who unknowingly pulls over an autonomous car for speeding? “Okay, sir, let me see your licen-, uh, sir? Oh, the old invisibility trick, eh? Wise guy, huh? Okay, smarty pants, let’s see you make this ticket disappear!”
Or the teenager who says, “Mom, can I borrow the car tonight?” Parent responds, “No, dear, the car is out shopping and won’t be back till midnight. It’s going to the drive-in theater with the car across the street. Double feature tonight, ‘Car Wash’ and ‘Corvette Summer.’”

Classy Cat Gets Stuck in a Mercedes

The Mercedes S-series features some of the carmaker’s best efforts in its lineup, but no marketing guru ever dreamed the engine compartment would double as home sweet home for a kitten. Yes, the Mercedes S400 hybrid is a standard of luxury, as is its cousin, the S550. Last week, a kitten exploring under the hood of a 550 got stuck, and cried so loudly that a man in the next lane heard it during a stop at a traffic light.

Now, the story about the “cat rescued from a car” has gone viral, complete with photos and the whole story about how a crowd of people gathered to coax the little feline out of the cramped quarters. The tale ended with one man who first spotted the cat’s face in the wheel well taking it home and naming it Mercedes. Apparently, the cat had been in the car for most of the trip but the owners didn’t hear it due to the sound of the engine.

On a related note, the cat-stuck-in-engine-compartment phenomenon is not uncommon. Here is a short clip showing how it usually happens.

This sort of near-tragedy could never occur with an electric car, because the quiet revving of the motor would be too soft to drown out the mewing of a stranded kitten. So, chalk that up as just one more advantage of electric cars. Animal safety! The automotive engineers never thought of that.

Mercedes the viral cat sure does have great taste, that’s for sure. No doubt she mistook that S550 sedan for an S400 hybrid, the leading choice of smart cats everywhere. With a sticker of $91,850, and 19/25 mpg, the S400 is a hybrid anyone can fall in love with. The 7-speed automatic has paddle shifters and Airmatic suspension. But please, don’t sleep in the engine compartment.

Father’s Day is almost here and the question on every son’s and daughter’s mind is the same: What type of hybrid vehicle should we get for dear old Dad this year? The research is in, and it is screamingly obvious that dads want hybrid cars and trucks, so save yourself a bunch of window shopping and check out the official MyPerfectAutomobile.com list of the top-ten gift ideas this Father’s Day.

For slightly more than $60,000, you can buy Dad either a VW Touareg hybrid or a GMC Yukon hybrid. Both cars offer roominess, are big on safety, and look great. These are not sports cars, but aren’t intended to be. The Touareg and the Yukon are tough, sturdy, imposing vehicles. For about $10,000 more, you can get a sporty model by buying a Porsche Cayenne hybrid. What more is there to say? It’s hot. It’s fast. It’s a hybrid. And it’s a Porsche.

For $92,000, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class hybrid is on a similar plane of coolness as the Porsche. Loaded with awesome safety features and plenty more bells and whistles, the Benz is a winner for Father’s Day. Coming in at number six on our list is the Cadillac Escalade hybrid, retailing at just under $86,000.

Rounding out the top five best hybrids for Dad, consider number five, the BMW ActiveHybrid 750 for $101,000, or the number four pick, Porsche Panamera for $95,000. Number three is the Lexus LS 600h, with a sticker of $112,750.

For the top two best hybrids to get Dad, it is a tie between two cars that aren’t even hybrids! They’re both electric. The Tesla Roadster and the Tesla Model S, at $128,500, and $105,400, respectively top the list.

P.S.: It is still okay to buy Dad a tie or take him out to his favorite steakhouse, just remember that he is probably expecting a new hybrid (or Tesla) car from the above list. Don’t let him down.

Inside the celebrity favorite

Celebrity tastes are hard to pin down, with fads changing every few weeks, it seems, in the areas of clothing, dating, food, music, and hairstyles. Dittos when it comes to cars, except that there is indeed a clear winner in the celeb-stakes of automobiles. In fact, the four-wheeled pride that is dearest to stars and starlets’ hearts is a green ride, already popular amongst us regular folk.

Oddly, some of the famous faces who drive the “car of the stars” do so secretly, while others take every chance they get to tout their “green credentials.” And for once, perhaps in all history, a celebrity trend is actually a wise investment rather than a giant money-waster. Sure, the customized Porsches and Ferraris still abound with the glitterati set, but macho types, blushing starlets, mega-stars and power brokers of Hollywood agree, the Toyota Prius is the car of the hour, and maybe of the decade, for those among what used to be called the “jet set.”

In the category of Most Beloved Green Car for Hollywood Celebrities, the winner is … The Toyota Prius. Big, really big, names are Prius owners, like Harrison Ford (shouldn’t he be driving a Ford Fusion?), Dustin Hoffman, Tom Hanks, and Matt Damon. So are David Duchovny, Bradley Cooper, Forest Whitaker, Zachary Quinto and comics Will Ferrel, Anna Farris and Matt Groening.

Ladies love the Prius as much as the men do. Rachel Bilson is spotted all over Hollywood in hers, as are Emily Blunt, the elusive Demi Moore, Natalie Portman, Miley “Hannah Montana” Cyrus, and Cameron Diaz (why not a Camaro for Cameron?). Even pretty woman Julia Roberts, friendly Jennifer Aniston, and Calista Flockhart drive the famous Prius hybrid. Hey, that means Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart are a two Prius family! Do they travel together, or does Harrison go ‘Solo’?

Currently, the Toyota Prius is the best selling hybrid automobile in the world, so maybe these celebrities are onto something. Chevrolet once sold a car called the Celebrity, but it never made a splash among actual celebrities the way Prius has.

Chevy Volt in Adverse Driving Conditions

I have had the opportunity to drive the Volt, that belongs to Bob T, who I work for, in severe, adverse conditions.

I was able to do this because he is currently out of town and has no knowledge of where his car has been, until now!

I first drove it down to the beach, through the pounding surf, to test its “water-proof” exterior and durability of the “wrap” that is on it!

Then, I wanted to see how it handled in the mountains, during a snow blizzard, without chains on the tires!

From there, I heard about an existing sand storm in the Mojave Desert and couldn’t wait to report on how the Volt would hold up under those “blistering” conditions.

Having put the Volt through all those amazing test, and with only having to charge the batteries twice, I was astounded that there are absolutely no damages that can’t be fixed!

Even more exciting, is by the time I woke up from the “dream” of doing those things, all the repairs were already done and no additional mileage was registered on the odometer! This was quite an amazing adventure. Even though it was not real, it made for some interesting reading and emotion, didn’t it?

This is a great tale a friend sent to me – it shows the difference between two particular individuals – it lays out the real difference between men and women – in their struggle for happiness – life – love and the automobile.

In this example we are quoting ‘word for word’ two individual’s personal diaries. We purposefully removed the names of those involved to keep this as anonymous as possible. We substituted their real names with “Jim” and “Wife”.

“Its April 2 – Tonight – I thought Jim was acting weird. We had made plans to meet at a nice restaurant for dinner. I was shopping with my friends all day long and I was a little late for our date. Conversation wasn’t flowing – so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late; but he made no comment on it.”

“So I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed – but he didn’t say much. I asked him what was wrong;
He said – ‘Nothing.’ I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset. He said he wasn’t upset – that it had nothing to do with me – and not to worry about it.”

“On the way home – I told him that I loved him. He smiled slightly – and kept driving. I can’t explain his behavior I don’t know why he didn’t say – ‘I love you – too.’ When we got home – I felt as if I had lost him completely – as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there quietly – and watched TV.”

“He continued to seem distant & absent. Finally – with silence all around us – I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later – he came to bed. But I still felt that he was distracted – and his thoughts were somewhere else. He fell asleep – I cried. I don’t know what to do. I’m almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster.”

“April 2nd – My Motorcycle won’t start – can’t figure out why. Oh well – try again tomorrow.”
