Hybrid Cars Dominate Sustainability Ranking

At Sonoma Raceway’s second annual ‘Accelerating Sustainable Performance’ summit this week, a new ranking system for environmental drive trains was introduced. Called a ‘sustainable performance ranking metric,’ the aim of the system is to evaluate vehicles based on a combination of their performance ability and their sustainability. Consultant Joey Shepp came up with the new ranking metric, which is unique in its ability to measure an engine system’s overall quality.

Hybrid Racer, Honda Mugen CR-Z GT: Video

In the world of hybrid drive systems, all the best research takes place at the racetrack. In the video clip linked below, watch as Honda’s Mugen CR-Z GT hybrid racecar does a few laps, proving that the 2.8-liter V6 is ready to compete against its archrival, the Toyota Prius GT, another hybrid race phenomenon. The Mugen hybrid GT features an electric motor where the car’s back seats used to be, and a battery pack on the front passenger seat. Honda has two goals for the Mugen hybrid racer, namely to garner publicity for the brand and to develop an efficient hybrid racer for the next-gen NSX.

Hybrids: Power and Performance

Developers of the new rating system evaluated cars in several categories of size and price, with hybrid drive trains coming out at or near the top of many segments. In ‘sedans and coupes under $30,000,’ Toyota Camry LE hybrid was number two, while the Kia Optima LX hybrid, and Hyundai’s Sonata hybrid were numbers five and six, respectively. Number nine was Volkswagen’s Passat TDI SE diesel. The Ford Fusion hybrid came in at number ten. Six of the top ten in the category were hybrid-drive cars or clean diesel power trains.
