Ferrari made history this week at the Geneva Motor Show by unveiling its hybrid car, the LaFerrari. The company’s chairman, Luca Montezemolo, noted that the design is a sign of things to come for the elite automaker, commenting, “It is an advanced laboratory for the Ferraris of tomorrow.” In an attempt to “avoid speculators,” as Mr. Montezemolo said, Ferrari will select 499 worthy buyers from a pool of inquirers that has already grown to 700, in spite of the $1.3 million sticker price. “We want real collectors of Ferrari,” Montezemolo proudly proclaimed to a packed media conference in Geneva.

Ferrari Hybrid: Video

Ferrari’s look speaks for itself, and the short video below is the official company intro for the LaFerrari. The hybrid vehicle has just debuted at the Geneva Motor Show, and it attests to the continued innovation that resides in the Ferrari DNA. The new model features a carbon-fiber chassis and a state-of-the-art hybrid system known as HY-KERS.

Ferrari Hybrid

Multinational Ferrari S.p.A. is a subsidiary of Fiat. Enzo Ferrari founded his namesake firm in the year of the Great Depression, 1929, as a maker of race cars and a sponsor of race drivers. In 1947 Ferrari made its initial foray into the world of street cars, though it never lost its racing interests. To this day, the company is active in Formula 1 events, and its cars have become synonymous with excellence, wealth, and style.

At the 2008 North American International Auto Show, Ferrari showed an ethanol-burning F430 Spider. Company spokespersons had said there will be at least one hybrid in the automaker’s lineup by 2015, and are certainly living up to that promise. Ferrari displayed a model 599 hybrid at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. That car employed the HY-KERS hybrid drive train, which is identical to the one on the LaFerrari hybrid.

The one-of-a-kind Ferrari P 4/5 Competizione could get a hybrid-drive system by 2014 and compete against other hybrid super-cars, like the Audi R18 e-tron Quattro and Toyota’s TS030. The P 4/5 already holds the record as the swiftest Ferrari to run at Nurburgring. In an attempt to satisfy Le Mans Prototype-1 criteria for an ‘alternative energy car,’ the P 4/5 will likely get some version of a hybrid drivetrain, though the exact configuration is unknown.

Ferrari P 4/5 Competizione: Video

There is no sense in looking at photos of a Ferrari P 4/5 when video exists. The clip below provides a dose of the car starting up and driving. The unique racing vehicle sounds like a jet engine revving in a closed garage, even though it is sitting in a wide-open field. The footage was taken on the test track at Vallelunga during a private run. This is the non-hybrid version of course, but the final design for the hybrid P 4/5 will likely carry most of this car’s exterior architecture.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnNad4onC18&feature=fvwrel

Ferrari Hybrid Racer

The team that races the car is not sponsored by Ferrari, but by private investors. The vehicle’s owner, James Glickenhaus, has high hopes for the world’s only Ferrari P 4/5 Competizione, not only wanting to go hybrid, but also desiring to bring down the Nurburgring record to under 6:51, which currently stands as the fastest Ferrari lap on the world-famous track.

A hybrid P 4/5 would be a logical progression in the family of elite racing, as several major automakers are already sponsoring teams that pilot hybrid entries. Will there ever be a production version of the P 4/5? That is a good question, considering that, incredibly, the vehicle is currently street legal. For now, however, there is only one in the entire world, and the owner plans on keeping it.

One of the most famous automakers on earth will be introducing a hybrid drive-train in 2013. Living up to the long tradition of power under the hood of every Ferrari, this green car will feature two electric motors, each with 120 horsepower, and a 7.3-liter V12, 800-horsepower monster of a combustion engine for a total of over 1000 hp. The few spy shots available are intriguing but ultimately unreliable, since the automaker is known to disguise its test cars when they are near the prying eyes of journalists.

Ferrari Hybrid: Video

Since no one can state with certainty what the new F70 hybrid will look like, it is refreshing to get some solid spy photos courtesy of the Internet, summarized in the video link below. Based primarily on testing from the Ferrari FXX as well as research coming from the Millechili Project at the University of Modena in Italy, the new hybrid from Ferrari is expected to weigh about 2,200 pounds.

Ferrari Hybrid: Collectors’ Item Before Arrival?

Ferrari devotees are avid collectors, some owners keeping dozens of the cars in storage as investments that grow in value with each passing year. No doubt the F70 hybrid will become a huge draw not just as a Ferrari but as the company’s first-ever hybrid drive-train.

Joining Bentley, Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, and Peugeot in the upscale hybrid niche, Ferrari will go to the front of the line in terms of price and desirability when it becomes available. There has been no official word on price, but considering that even a used Ferrari 360 fetches well over $100,000, the sticker on a fresh-off-the-line F70 hybrid will probably cause more than its share of fainting spells. Seriously, guesses from those in the know place the new F70’s price at something over $850,000. As one comment on a Ferrari chat room summed it up, “The F70 will be a hybrid, but it is not going to be priced like a Prius.”

Ferrari’s new HY-KERS hybrid is based on the 599 GTB Fioriano. The vehicle features a V-12 engine linked to an electric motor that provides an additional 100hp. The hybrid system works similar to that of a Toyota Prius – whenever the car brakes, regenerative braking sends energy to a prismatic-cell battery pack, and the engine turns off. This energy can then be used to extend the vehicle’s range or provide a 100hp assist while driving. The vehicle is also capable of operating in full-electric mode for short trips.

The hybrid system does add about 220 pounds of weight, although Ferrari found a way to distribute it to give the vehicle a lower center of gravity. When all’s said and done, the retrofit is able to boost the vehicle’s city mileage by about 50%.

Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo has stated “We want to build a hybrid with huge power and huge performance. Within three to four years, every Ferrari in our lineup will offer some version of hybrid operation.”

Ok, so the green color is ugly and if you are going to own a Ferrari it should be Ferrari Red. There is such color, ask any car salesman, and they will know exactly what you mean. But the green color does remind you that attention is being paid to make the car more environmentally friendly. The federal mpg standards that have been set for the next decade present a serious challenge for exotic car manufacturers where the emphasis has always been on performance, the 0-100 challenge, or the 180 Mph goal. Bigger engines, V-8, V-10 or even a V-12 means less Mpg. Exotic car manufacturers don’t have the luxury of billion dollar R&D budgets. But on the other hand I think this will present the challenge that their R&D staff thrive on. There is nothing like the adrenaline rush of burning the midnight oil and waking up early in the morning trying to tackle challenges.

The combination possibilities are endless. I will write an article about that in the future but here are the ingredients: Pure electric, Hybrid, Turbo, Alternative Fuels, Supercharged Hybrid, Regenerative, Clean Diesel, Single Gear, 7-speed, Aerodynamics, In-wheel electric motor…….I am sure I missed some.
