Citroen Hybrid Air car (cutaway display)

At the Geneva Auto Show in March, Citroen will unveil its new Hybrid Air system, which uses a combination of gasoline, hydraulic power, and compressed air to power a vehicle. The company says testing has shown the hybrid air powertrain to be extremely fuel efficient, especially in city driving at speeds under 45 mph. Current data suggests that Citroen’s air car would be able to achieve approximately 97 mpg.

For a quick summary of how the Peugeot-Citroen air hybrid system works, see the video clip below. As the company points out, this type of compressed air-drive can be installed on virtually any car in existence. Citroen has pioneered the technology based upon its research into compressed-air cars, which are not very practical unless they have another method of propulsion. In the Citroen model headed to the Geneva show for a March debut, compressed air works for city driving, at speeds up to about 45 mph. For 50 minutes, the car need not use gasoline or any other type of fuel, just air. With promises of fuel efficiency around 100 mpg within a hybrid system, the new technology will certainly draw plenty of media scrutiny at the March event in Geneva.

Citroen Hybrid Air

Citroen’s official literature on the technology says that it will not affect cabin space, will be affordable, and leads to much lower carbon emissions. At the Geneva event, the company will show its C3 Vti 82 car, which is a prototype that employs the air hybrid technology. As far as the carbon footprint is concerned, Citroen’s air hybrid cuts CO2 emissions by about half in city driving. The company has been experimenting with hydraulic systems in cars since 1955.

Citroen Berlingo EV

Citroen will show off its Berlingo Electrique EV at the Birmingham, UK Commercial Vehicle Show that runs from April 9-11. The fresh-faced EV from Citroen recharges in about eight hours and can travel 106 miles between charges. For now, the company is not saying much else about the car except that it will offer regenerative braking, an electric heater, and an Eco-driving information readout.

Citroen Berlingo: Video

The Berlingo EV will certainly get plenty of media attention when it arrives at the CVS in April. Citroen, however, is no stranger to the power of electric drive, hence the above video clip featuring the Citroen Survolt in a duel (just for fun really) against the electric sport motorcycle Agni Z2. More a high-tech ad than a race, the short clip nevertheless is intriguing. The Survolt and its faux competitor in the video are both capable of well over 100 mph. In fact, the Survolt EV can travel from zip to 60 in under five seconds and tops out at 162 mph. The sports car concept is driven by Le Mans Series star Vanina Ickx, while the Agni is helmed by TTXGP Series champ Jenny Tinmouth. No real match for the Survolt, the Agni Z2 features a 125 mph top speed. Even though we know this is not a real race, it is still plenty of fun to watch both amazing electric vehicles in action.

Commercial Vehicle Show in the UK

April’s Commercial Vehicle Show is a mammoth event for the auto industry, and this year will feature a large number of truck, trailer, and van manufacturers, telematics specialists, tire manufacturers, and a wide assortment of hydraulic suppliers. The CVS is billed as the biggest of its kind in the UK and is one of the few such shows to offer free admission.

Citroen DS3, non-electric model

The Citroen stand at the Paris Motor Show will feature at least one vehicle no one has ever seen, the DS3 Electrum concept, a battery-electric passenger car that is said to have a range of 72 miles and operate in total silence. A pair of 65 kW motors powers the front axle. A lithium-ion pack rated at 17.5 kWh supplies the motor, while a quick-charge port can re-juice the Electrum to 80 percent of its power in a half hour.

Citroen DS3: Video

Since no videos yet exist of the Citroen DS3 Electrum, here is the next best thing; a clip of the automaker’s DS3 Cabrio, a trend-setting model that some guess is the foundation design for the upcoming Electrum. Of course, the Cabrio’s big selling point is the odd-but-clever convertible roof. If this is anything like the Electrum, the Citroen has delivered a double winner, with upscale styling and an electric motor. For those interested, the riveting background song, a perfect theme for Cabrio, is Brittany Sanders singing ‘New Model.’

Citroen DS3 EV: Details

Citroen designers were tasked with using a combustion version of the DS3 and converting it to electric drive without major architectural changes. Apparently, the experiment was a success, and Citroen may have accomplished something that major carmakers have grappled with up to now. Utilizing clever battery placement and frugal component layouts, the team ended up with an electric-drive version of the DS3 that suffered no loss of interior space.

The Paris Motor Show opens on Sept. 27 and will feature numerous concept electric and plug-in vehicles, many of which are making their world debuts. Citroen says of the Electrum that it provides, “optimum on-board comfort with zero noise.”
