Ram will offer a diesel version of its 1500 pickup truck for 2014, complete with a 3.0-liter V6 EcoDiesel engine, which happens to be the identical engine on the company’s Jeep Grand Cherokee. That model variation was brought out in January and features a 240-horsepower rating, though it is not known whether the new Ram pickup will mirror every aspect of the Grand Cherokee. The new Ram diesel will go on sale in the third quarter of 2013 and will offer an 8-speed automatic. For its part, Ram expects to create a competitive advantage with the new pickup, as none of its current market rivals sells a diesel-powered pickup.

As noted above, the Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel model is already in production, and was revealed at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show in January. (See the presentation in the clip below). The 2014 model year Jeep uses an EcoDiesel engine, the first U.S. vehicle in its class to do so. Boasting a range of 800 miles per tank and featuring an automatic 8-speed transmission, the powerful vehicle lists 240 horsepower and an incredible 420 foot-pounds of torque at 2.000 rpm. The 4×4 can tow 7,700 pounds.

Ram 1500 Goes Diesel

The brand’s CEO and President, Fred Diaz, noted that Ram would soon be the lone carmaker to sell a diesel half-ton, once the new 1500 lands in showrooms. The EcoDiesel engine could end up finding a home in three of the company’s products, namely Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ram 1500, and Wrangler. Of course, one of the biggest selling points of the EcoDiesel powertrain is its high power coupled with attractive fuel economy. Ram customer surveys have indicated that buyers want a diesel choice in the half-ton category.

The EPA has given the new Fiat 500e electric car a combined 116 mpg-e fuel efficiency rating, which places the newest EV above all other U.S. electric cars but two. With 25 dealerships in California, Fiat plans to begin selling the 500e in that state sometime after March. A specific breakout of the EPA data shows the 500e achieving 108 mpg-e in city driving and 122 mpg-e on the highway.

The celebrities were out in force for this special Fiat 500e event, meticulously documented in the video clip above. Watch as Ron Howard and others ooh and aah over the tiny electric wonder, a car with more personality than most other four-wheeled inanimate objects. Fiat has been among a handful of companies that use celebrity endorsement for a major launch. In this case, the company went all out and actually snagged more than a half-dozen A-list stars to talk about the newest, cutest, EV on the market. The recent LA Auto Show was the venue for much of the celeb schmoozing. That way, most of the glitterati did not have to travel very far for their face-time with the Fiat 500e. The Honda Fit EV and the Scion iQ EV have slightly better combined mpg-e ratings than the Fiat 500e, coming in at 118 and 121, respectively. When it comes to highway numbers, however, the Fiat 500e holds the best rating with its 122 mpg-e. The car boasts a range of nearly 90 miles per charge. The non-electric version of the Fiat 500 has been on sale in the U.S. for two years.

C-Max Hybrid, sales leader for Ford

Ford, Chrysler, GM, and Hyundai all posted large sales gains for the month of November, according to data just released. In Ford’s case, much of that increase was due to its fast-selling C-Max hybrid. Fiat, Chrysler’s parent company, saw significant sales gains based on its new line of Fiat 500 cars. As has been the case with many carmakers in 2012, Ford can attribute much of its good news to hybrid-drive technology. The company’s C-Max hybrid enjoyed much better sales than expected. In the non-hybrid category for Ford, the company’s F-Series trucks saw sales shoot up by almost 20 percent.

Ford engineers and designers came up with a top-selling, top-performing hybrid when they created the C-Max. Not to be outdone, the company’s marketing department developed a unique series of advertisements for the car. In case you have not seen one, yet, watch the clip below. The two announcers are a special type of strange, that’s for sure. But follow along as they humorously discuss, and hilariously demonstrate, several of the car’s intriguing features. And just for the record, Henry Ford did not say, “I want to make driving totally awesome.” Either way, we think you will enjoy the Ford C-Max ads, and especially the “off-center” personalities of the actors.

Other Hybrids

For Toyota, November was the second-best month ever for Prius Plug-in sales. The company has been uncharacteristically discounting the car by nearly $5,000 in some markets in order to boost sales, and the tactic obviously has worked. For pure electric cars, the Nissan Leaf barely missed having a record-setting month, but the carmaker was very happy with November nonetheless, witnessing 1,539 units sold. The car’s best ever month was October, when the Japanese automaker sold 1,579 Leafs.

Jeep Grand Cherokee will get EcoDiesel engine

Chrysler has announced that it will introduce at least two major brands with clean diesel engines by the 2014 model year. Using a proprietary EcoDiesel badge, the company intends to sell its Jeep Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300 as clean diesel vehicles. While some industry experts see this move as a way for the company to meet upcoming fuel standards, others point out that Chrysler is merely attempting to compete with its rivals who are making waves with clean diesel technology, notably Volkswagen.

By 2016, the U.S. fuel standard will be 34.4 mpg. That number is very likely to rise again in 2025, to 56.5 mpg, though that part of the standard has not yet been finalized by the U.S. Congress. While all this diesel news is groundbreaking for U.S. consumers, it should be noted that Chrysler has already been selling diesel versions of its Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Chrysler 300 in Europe for some time.

With Fiat as majority owner of Chrysler Group LLC, many expect that other models will follow suit, with Chrysler offering perhaps up to a dozen clean diesel cars and trucks to American consumers by the end of the decade.

Since 2009, Fiat has been the majority owner of Chrysler Group LLC, which is Chrysler’s official name. Based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, the company opened its doors in 1925, and now sells several brands, the best known of which are Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, Ram, SRT, Fiat, and Mopar. Between 2009 and the present time, Fiat slowly built up its ownership in Chrysler Group, which had just emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June, 2009. Now, Fiat owns almost 62 percent of the Michigan automaker. By 2014, plans are in place for Fiat to offer seven of its own brands in the U.S., while Chrysler name brands will sell in Europe.
