A 2013 Toyota Prius v

Toyota has announced that it will begin selling electricity systems that use recycled Prius batteries for power. The units will work in conjunction with overall electrical management systems in buildings, solar generating stations, and lighting circuits The recycled nickel-metal hydride batteries will allow for storage of significant amounts of electricity, to the tune of about 10 kWh, and will tip the scales at over 2,000 pounds per unit. The storage devices will be able to cut energy costs for some businesses by as much as 50 percent.

Toyota Super Bowl Commercial

Toyota always seems to be up for the game when Super Bowl time rolls around. Below is the full commercial featuring Kaley Cuoco, who appears as the RAV4 genie and grants wishes to an unsuspecting family. The husband, wife, and children can’t seem to make their intentions clear to the slightly wacky genie. In the end, it all works out, and everyone ends up happily scooting along in the Toyota. It is all part of the company’s “Let’s go places” ad campaign, with this particular version called “Wish granted.” Watch for Cuoco to build a portfolio of Toyota ads as the carmaker leverages her current sitcom fame and familiar face to get the word out about the latest Toyota models.

Toyota has pioneered electrical adaptability of its hybrid car batteries, last years announcing an inverter system that would allow Prius plug-ins to operate as emergency home generating units in the event of natural disasters. Still the best-selling hybrid in the world, the Toyota Prius is facing more competition than ever as scores of automakers have entered the hybrid-electric vehicle market. In an effort to stay ahead of the marketing curve, the company has looked at innovative ways to use and even recycle battery components from its Prius family of cars.

Green transportation entrepreneur Elon Musk, founder of Tesla Motors, is considered one of the world’s leading innovators. The Tesla Roadster, Model S, and Model X have the potential to completely transform the look of passenger travel in this century. Musk is also the founder of PayPal, an online payment firm, and Space X, which works to advance the state of rocket science and space travel. The 41-year-old green visionary holds two bachelor’s degrees, one in physics and the other in business. He also created the Musk Foundation, a charitable organization that encourages green energy development, science education, and child healthcare.

Bob Lutz

Automotive icon Bob Lutz has been a staple of the transportation industry for a half-century, having spent 47 years in the business even before his retirement from GM as vice chairman in 2010. He held senior leadership jobs at four of the world’s biggest carmakers and now serves on numerous boards of diverse organizations like the Marine Military Academy, Transonic Combustion, and the U.S. Marine Corps University Foundation. These days, Lutz works hard at ushering in the era of the extended-range electric truck, having already earned the moniker, “Father of the Chevy Volt” while at GM.

One of Lutz’s current projects is Via Motors, a company that produces extended-range electric trucks. The brief video clip below features the latest offerings from the company and was shown during this year’s North American International Auto Show, at the press conference for Via Motors that was hosted by Bob Lutz. “Affordable, powerful, quiet, and clean,” as the narrator’s voice intones, Via’s electric work trucks are unique in the industry. As with so many of Lutz’s projects, Via Motors is already changing the way fleet managers think about transportation.

The next year, he received his master’s degree in Marketing from the same school, with highest honors. Forty-one years later, Bob was awarded an honorary Doctor of Management degree from Kettering University. Fluent in English, German, and French, Lutz will turn 81 in February.

Tesla Model S

Hollywood heavyweights Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have recently been spotted in their new Tesla Model S electric car. A whole host of tinsel-town celebs has been making the move to green driving lately, with Ben and Jen now officially the newest members of the eco-elite. Tesla Motors made headlines this week in a non-celebrity story when it became known that some reservation holders were attempting to sell their slots on eBay. Tesla in Europe?

In related news, Tesla Motors announced this week that the company would build an assembly plant in Europe. The facility will produce left-hand drive Tesla vehicles for European buyers, who until now had not had the chance to purchase the popular electric Model S sedan. In order to avoid paying extremely high import tariffs on the cars, Tesla will ship parts to Europe and then assemble the vehicles there, thus avoiding tariffs altogether. Though buyers will likely have to pay the VAT, the car will not be priced out of the market by any means. In fact, the region could become one of the company’s most profitable locales.

Expendables 2: Electric Drive version of Smart Car

In a movie that looks like it torched over a million gallons of petroleum for special effects, you might not expect to see a highly fuel-efficient vehicle like the Smart Car. While the film’s producers considered using a specially-equipped Jaguar for the scene in question, the new Sylvester Stallone action movie eventually opted for the tiny Smart Car due to its weight. The floor of the airport where the Schwarzenegger/Willis shot was done could not support a heavy vehicle. So, Smart Car to the rescue.

Expendables 2: Video

Watching film legends Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis joke about the tiny car is part of what made the film number-one at the box office its opening week.

The short clip above, which has already earned fame as “the Expendables 2 Smart Car scene,” is a viral video hit that is all of 39 seconds in length. Arnold is right, though. His shoes are bigger than the car. Since producer Stallone loves a good gag, look for the return of the Smart Car in Expendables 3, which is set to debut in late 2013 with Nicolas Cage, Harrison Ford, and Wesley Snipes.

Daimler’s designers conceived of the Smart car more than two decades ago, and even then, they envisioned an electric drive-train. The Smart Electric Drive (ED) model is a 100 percent electric vehicle that is virtually identical in design to the combustion versions.

More filmmakers are featuring electric and hybrid vehicles in their productions, notably the Avengers film and the most recent incarnation of Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible series. Brad Pitt;  Hey good lookin, what’s ya got cookin..hows about cookin a hybrid up with meeeee…. Yup, another Hybrid owner.

Bob, a fortune 500 hybrid car owner “par excellence”.  Smart and sophisticated, always has the edge when it comes defining what it means to “own a perfect Automobile”,  his real name? Robert Twaalfhoven, but everyone on the planet knows him as Bob T. Presidential choice. Chevy Volt

The President under whom the $7,500 federal alternative fuel rebate was born has purchased a Chevrolet Volt for one of his least famous offspring. Former President George H.W. Bush bought a Volt for his son Neil. If President Obama follows up on his own promise to buy a Volt after leaving office, that would automatically make the GM hybrid-drive an ex-presidential favorite. In fairness to Obama, he is unable to drive a Volt while in office because of the difficulty of equipping the thing with proper armoring. The 2,000-pound doors might cut into the electric range just a bit.

In fact, what most major media outlets are treating as a fluff story is actually symbolic of several serious trends in American politics, not the least of which is the Republican party’s warming up to the idea of green transportation. Now that the primary season is nearly over, it looks like the views of Mitt Romney, the likely nominee, will prevail in the party’s official platform. Long an advocate of green vehicles, Romney and his backers will no doubt be displaying their green enthusiasm between now and election day.

One of the conservative movement’s oldest and soundest voices, Fred Barnes of the Weekly Standard, has spoken highly of the American car, noting its game-changer power for the U.S. auto industry. Indeed, some of the more conservative news outlets have also had nice things to say about what many call the world’s most famous car. Liberals and conservatives agree on one major thing about the Chevy Volt, namely that if its price were about 15 to 25 percent lower, it might possibly become the bestselling automobile in history.

In the tradition of classic auto stunts, a prototype Mitsubishi i-MiEV will drive up Pike’s Peak this coming July as part of the popular International Hill Climb. The carmaker looks to the event as part stunt, part test for the new prototype electric car. Adding a touch of celebrity to the mix, Mitsubishi has hired international racing star Hiroshi Masuoka. For those who are not race fans, Masuoka is that sport’s version of Jack Nicholson, having competed in the grueling Paris-to-Africa Dakar Rally over 20 times. Masuoka won that race twice, placing him among the most elite race drivers on earth.

The last decade has seen a growing interest in alternative fuel vehicles taking part in race events, but this is by far the most unusual to date. Each year the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb pits cars and motorcycles against each other in what is informally called “the world’s most vertical car race.” Indeed, drivers climb almost one mile in altitude over the three-mile course. Founded during World War I, the Pikes Peak race is among the oldest automotive speed competitions in the U.S.

For engines, the trek is endlessly challenging, since the atmospheric conditions change so rapidly during the climb. Vehicles that are not meticulously tuned are early casualties. Only the best of the best make it to the top. Mitsubishi Motors is sending an entire team of engineers to the event in order to collect data from the race car, and to provide any last minute fixes that might be required.

This is big business to the automaker, which will use data from this race to fine-tune the consumer version of its i-MiEV, and to lay the groundwork for the company’s upcoming hybrid and advanced electric models.

Let’s see.  What did I get for my 18th birthday? I think it was some Kahlua with Vanilla Ice Cream. Not like I’m jealous or anything. I can sing. Not. (My kids will say “Dad – “Not” is so last century). Anyways, let’s check out this Sexy Fisker Karma!

The basic Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid costs approximately $87,900 (not Justin’s – which seems to have some nice rims on it added by Usher – no doubt).

The Fisker Karma does not have a traditional shifter, which makes good sense because it doesn’t have a traditional transmission that needs to be shifted.  Instead, there are four buttons on the center console in an angular pattern with P, R, N and D finished in grey.  When you first fire up the Karma, the P button is lit in red and when you push the Drive button the luxury sport sedan seamlessly prepares itself to rock and roll.

The Fisker Karma can run purely on electric power supplied by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery for up to 50 miles (80 km); after that, a 175 kW generator driven by an efficient, 2. liter, direct-injection, turbocharged gasoline engine extends the range an additional 250 miles (403 km). The Fisker Karma’s total range between recharge/refuel can reach 300 miles.

Fisker Karma buyers will choose from three trim levels: EcoBase, EcoSport and EcoChic. The most advanced sustainable material series, EcoChic, is based on an animal-free approach that still offers a luxurious environment. Leather is replaced by 100% Bamboo Viscose, a soft hand textile, while EcoGlass trim frames authentic fossilized leaves. Karma’s EcoSport series incorporates hand-wrapped premium leather using a 100% sustainable manufacturing strategy, which minimizes the number of hides required and highlights natural markings.

The Fisker Karma and all future Fisker vehicles will be sold and serviced through a global network of established, reputable, independent retailers. In the U.S., 45 locations have been identified, with a similar number planned for European markets.

What about the Fisker Karma Electric Car Engine?

The Fisker Karma is the first and only true production Electric Vehicle with extended range (EVer). Simply put, that means the Karma is driven solely and at all times by electric traction motors. An on-board range-extending gasoline engine drives a generator to power the motors as needed; there is no mechanical link between the internal-combustion engine and the drive wheels.Fisker karma is a genuinely unique proposition.  It is an extended-range luxury electric vehicle that seats four.  It has two drive modes.

I love car commercials. They are what make people fall in love with vehicles. Everything from the music, the actors, the dialogue, it all contributes to what, and how we view a vehicle. Some are humorous, others are more serious, throwing around big words like horsepower and torque. Most of the buzz, however, is leaning toward the Super Bowl car commercials. There are always good car ads lined up for the Super Bowl, but this year’s crop is going to be memorable for a long time.

So with all that commercial cash being spent by the likes of Honda, Audi, GM, Hyundai, Suzuki, Toyota, etc, it’s clear automakers are hoping to spur some major interest in their respective brand and cars. Will they be successful? That’s for you to decide, but thankfully we have compiled some of the more anticipated Superbowl car commercials for your viewing pleasure:

10. Chevy Sonic – Stunt Anthem

New car commercials air on TV on a daily basis. Owning and driving a car is not only a mere necessity but it is often a great pleasure, maybe even a hobby for some. Unfortunately, buying a car can be a tedious process – but not for these guys:

9. The Dog Strikes Back – Volkswagen

It placed fourth on a list of 50 all-time best Super Bowl car commercials compiled, giving VW a total of two all-timers — as many as all the other automakers combined. (Its other honoree, 2001′s ” Big Day ,” finished 19th).

VW may only sell one-fifth as many cars and trucks as Chevrolet, but when it comes to car commercials it runs well ahead of the pack in popularity and buzz without any bombast or boasting. Take last year’s Super Bowl spot, “The Force.” It showed a young boy no taller than a tailpipe in a Darth Vader costume unsuccessfully testing his supernatural powers until he fires up the family’s new Passat (with an assist from his keyfob-holding father).

8. Performance Basketball – Bridgestone

Funny car commercials have run in the Super Bowl before, and not just in recent years (remember the Volkswagen GTI ad from a while back in which the car gets stuck in a tree?). But this year, the automakers seem to be tripping all over each other to garner the most laughs and the most buzz.

This is a bit of a Love-Hate commercial – some audience members love/hate it because they were hoping for a Ferris Bueller Sequel which dropped their expectations.

The Super Bowl is an American tradition. You may watch it for the game, for the commercials, or simply as a way to spend time with family and friends. But as you dig into that pile of chicken wings, tray of nachos or bowl of chili, keep a look out for the big game changers. You might have something new to talk about at the office come Monday morning when all the “quarterbacks” come out. Like this one. Makes me want to change Chevy’s logo to “Chrysler Runs Deep”…

Top 10 Superbowl Car Commercial Ads

Is Super Bowl money well spent for any of the automakers? The answer appears to be yes. The broadcast provides an opportunity to reach an enormously wide audience — more than 100 million people — that is ideal if you have an equally-wide message to get across. It does seem odd to see $50,000 cars sold in the same space as beer, soft-drinks, and snack foods, but this is an audience of predominantly young men who are famously difficult to reach with most traditional media. One ad expert compared the reach of a Super Bowl ad to 250 ordinary TV commercials.

Funny Commercial Ads – Jerry Seinfeld & Jay Leno

The 2013 Acura NSX will feature all-wheel drive with Acura perhaps learning a lesson from rival Audi , who’s perfected the idea. Like its namesake predecessors, the 2013 Acura NSX will feature a mid-mounted V6 engine, but unlike them, it will have a 7-velocity transmission integrated with electric motors to drive the rear wheels and another pair of independent electric motors up front to Strength the front wheels. This gives the car a lot of advantages.

Not only that. Reported from Detroit Auto Show, The All-New 2013 Acura RDX comes with more compact interior design and longer than the 2012 model. Then to provide better comfort to the driver, Honda has provided New Suspension and Electric Power Steering on 2013 Acura RDX. Especially, for better calm, Active Noise Cancellation will be present and serves to mute the cockpit.

While most supercars opt for brute force delivered from a large engine – the NSX Concept champions the true racing philosophy of an extremely favorable power-to-weight ratio.
“Like the first NSX – we will again express high performance through engineering efficiency,” added Ito – who led the development of Acura’s first NSX supercar. “In this new era – even as we focus on the fun to drive spirit of the NSX – I think a supercar must respond positively to environmental responsibilities.”

The new Acura supercar – expected to debut in the next three years – will be developed by an engineering team led by Honda R&D Americas – Inc. – and manufactured in Ohio – at a yet to be named facility.
