In an effort to win new luxury customers in China, Cadillac is mounting an aggressive ad campaign that features actor Brad Pitt. The company hopes to lure a piece of the luxury segment away from entrenched German automakers BMW and Audi with the introduction of its XTS, CTS, and ATS models between now and 2014. Cadillac has chosen Pitt, one of the world’s most recognized celebrities, to help them gain ground in the competitive Chinese marketplace.

Two video clips highlight the latest news from Cadillac. Above, see the commercial where Brad Pitt makes his debut as the face of Cadillac in China. The ad was shot in San Francisco, with Mr. Bradillac himself behind the wheel, apparently tooling around town doing errands and enjoying the scenery.

Below, design winner ELR, the Cadillac version of the Chevy Volt, takes some cold punishment in northern Michigan in order to test braking systems and handling ability. The car endures falling snow, slick terrain and ice, all for the sake of science.

Cadillac ELR: Design Award Winner

Cadillac’s ELR extended-range electric car took home the prestigious Eyes on Design award at the most recent Detroit Auto Show. The EOD trophy is considered one of the top prizes in the industry and is handed out by a discerning panel of automotive designers each year at the North American International Auto Show. Judges give another award for the best-designed concept car, which went to Cadillac Converj, ELR’s predecessor, in 2009. In any case, the 2013 win for ELR in the production category was a major upset over its closest competitor, the 2014 Corvette Stingray.

For more about the Cadillac ELR see the company’s specific web page for the car:

A few months ago I was traveling around Europe. I wrote this blog but didn’t have time to publish it. So here it is! I will follow up with more as there has been a lot more great news since, both from GM and other car manufacturers in the Green arena!

Volt Sales Figures to Beat Target by Wide Margin!

Traveling around Holland and Amsterdam this week I spotted more Volts in one day than back home in San Jose, CA in a single day. Ok, so the Volt in Europe is typically called an Opel Ampera. Opel is the brand under which General Motors produces and markets Chevrolets in Germany and neighboring countries. In fact it is not that simple. Some countries such as Switzerland actually import Chevrolets and although it borders Germany, it has its own import laws and duties.

Rest assured that the Opel Ampera is the Chevy Volt 100%! The only difference a slight change in front look and a feature that lets you turn off the battery so the generator starts on command.

So what does this mean for the actual sales figures? To get the total picture for GM you add up USA sales figures and European sales figures and the rest of the world.

Although the Volt has been available since end 2010 in some states in the USA, its European equivalent only became available a year later and not in all of the European countries. However sales in Europe have been brisk and if it keeps going at its current rate is going to give the USA a challenge in total numbers sold per year.

Some reports already have more than 30,000 Volts/Amperas on the road and if current sales figures are any indication GM should be able to reach 100,000 before end of next year. Naturally it would help if the car was made available to the rest of the world.

Now having taken this gamble with the first mass produced EV with range extender I hope GM doesn’t become conservative. Now is the time to offer the same technology in various other GM models such as the Cadillac and Buick.

How about a plug-in SUV or convertible luxury car? And since a lot of America is still ga-ga about huge pickup trucks with an average of 13MPG, why not produce a pickup truck with plug-in Hybrid technology and thus give a drastic boost to attaining the average MPG goals set for the future. I would give it a 300hp electric motor and possibly double the battery size.

I just cruised through Europe with my family in a Volvo S50. It has a diesel engine. When I picked up the car at the airport with a full tank it told me I had a range of about 600 miles. I proceeded to drive about 120 miles. When I arrived at my destination it told me I had a range left of 630 miles. Now that’s efficient! A Diesel car typically gets about 30% more range on a gallon of diesel than a gasoline car on a gallon of gasoline.

So GM should make a Plug-in hybrid with a diesel range extender. I know Volvo has promised a big plug-in SUV soon with range extender. Lets see who can beat GM to the market!

When selling a luxury car online, experts recommend using several photos along with detailed descriptions. As with any higher-priced item, potential buyers want to know exactly what they are getting for their money. That’s why it is an absolute necessity to post high quality pictures in the listing. When you place an ad under the “Luxury Cars for Sale” section, take a bit more time with the description than you would with a lower-priced model. In this case, details are very important.

How to Prep Luxury Cars for Sale: Video

For one of the better instructional videos about how to prep a car for private sale, see the clip above. Though most of the advice could apply to any car, the film tends toward luxury vehicles specifically. In fact, you might recognize the sample car if you are a luxury vehicle enthusiast.
Note: Because the video was made for a UK audience, ignore the end section about legal paperwork. There is much less red tape involved when selling a used car in the U.S.

Top 10 Luxury Cars for Sale in U.S.

The car you are trying to buy or sell need not be in the top-10 listing of 2012 luxury cars for sale, but it is good to know what shoppers are looking for. Six through ten on the list, in order, are the Infiniti G, Acura MDX, Cadillac CTS, Cadillac SRX, and the Hyundai Genesis. Number five is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, while BMW vehicles hold third and fourth places. Fourth is the BMW 5-Series. Third place is BMW’s 3-Series. The number two best-selling luxury car is the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Taking the top spot on the list is the elegant Lexus RS. For those keeping track, that makes four Asian brands, four German brands, and two U.S. cars (both Cadillacs!) in the top ten.

If you are preparing to sell or buy a luxury vehicle, use the following information site to acquaint yourself with the history of the segment, learn about the different types of luxury cars (compact, entry-level, mid-level, and high-end, for example), and become conversant with common jargon that goes with the territory.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luxury_vehicle

To shop for or sell a car of any kind, begin at one of the highest-volume vehicle transaction sites on the Internet (link below). In less than five minutes you can have your vehicle listed, or locate the ideal car to suit your needs.

Though GM has not confirmed the report, Edmunds is saying the auto giant has a smaller, lighter engine in mind for the 2016 Chevy Volt and Cadillac ELR, both of which are hybrid-electric vehicles. The main component of the new effort, if reports are accurate, would be a 3-cylinder combustion engine for both cars. The change could see the Volt and ELR sporting a 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder engine rather than the current configuration, which is a 1.4-liter, 4-cylinder system.

Cadillac ELR: Video

Get up close and personal with the Cadillac ELR, fresh from its recent showing at the Chicago Auto Show. The standard media photos of the vehicle really do not do justice to the sleek, futuristic ELR, which features a slightly different version of the Chevy Volt drivetrain. With all the talk of the hybrid-electric capability of Cadillac’s freshest face, sometimes the elegance and interior luxury of the Cadillac brand is downplayed or forgotten. In the case of ELR, there was no skimping on interior elegance or high-quality design.

Volt, Cadillac ELR

Before any talk of smaller engines, the Cadillac ELR first came to the world as a concept car called Converj at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. In late 2013, it will go into production as an offering under the ELR nameplate. Using a 4-cylinder Voltec propulsion system, which is all-electric, the ELR will offer an electric range of 35 miles and a top speed of 100 mph. A coupe, the front-wheel-drive 2-door can be recharged in about four and a half hours from a 240-volt outlet. GM’s Delta II platform, which is also the basis for Volt and Cruze, will be used for production of the ELR.

For more about two of the vehicles that are making big news in the auto industry, see the websites of the Chevy Volt and the Cadillac ELR below:

A new report says that China will surpass the U.S. as the world’s biggest market for luxury cars. While many American consumers do not think of China as a nation that has any luxury cars for sale, the Asian manufacturing giant is expected to overtake the U.S. in that segment within three years. China’s economy is growing so rapidly, and its citizens are so desirous of status vehicles, that most experts were not surprised by the new data.

Luxury Cars for Sale: Video

One of the luxury cars for sale in the U.S., which has garnered plenty of media attention, is the Cadillac ELR, an electric-hybrid that uses a modified version of the drivetrain from GM’s Chevy Volt. The video clip below provides a fascinating look at the ELR in action during one of its harsh weather tests. Watch closely as the elegant ELR brakes and releases in the worst of conditions. The driver provides commentary throughout the clip, offering his insight into how the new hybrid-electric Cadillac handles at various points during the challenge.

Luxury Cars for Sale

According to consulting firm Global Management, luxury cars for sale in China sell quickly, with 2012 data showing more than 1.25 million such autos sold. The report noted that the Asian nation’s economy is expanding so fast it could well see luxury car sales reach the 3 million mark by 2020. The report also pointed out that consumer confidence is at an all-time high in China, and car buyers often look at luxury cars for sale as a long-term investment, much as Western consumers do a house or condo.

Though competition in the luxury segment is heating up, more than 80 percent of all luxury cars sold in China are products of German manufacturers like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi.

According to insurance giant USAA, buying the vehicle that is perfect for you comes down to one thing, a checklist. After deciding whether you want a new or used product, the company’s site advises that you develop a list which includes your preferences in 10 categories. Doing this self-survey will tell you what to look for, because you will have it all mapped out on paper. The ten categories, in no particular order, are mileage, comfort, reliability, safety, price, affordability, insurance, styling, special requirements (like seating, cargo space, towing capacity, and the like), and buying method (whether you will use a local dealer, shop online, buy from a private party, or use a broker).

Cadillac ELR: Video

The Cadillac name has a history that most other car brands dream of, having been an icon of the automotive industry for decades. Now, with the advent of an extended-range hybrid-electric Cadillac, many green-conscious car shoppers are looking closer at the ELR, Cadillac’s first-ever hybrid automobile. The clip below features footage from the ELR’s debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. The hybrid can travel 35 miles on electric power alone, until the engine kicks in. What is surprising about the ELR is the interior. Designers put a lot of thought into creating something that would carry the Cadillac look but be innovative and fresh at the same time. As you can clearly see in the video clip, they succeeded.

GM president Mark Reuss used the Detroit Auto Show to make a major pronouncement about the future of electric transportation, saying that, “The electric car is not dead.” As the executive heading up the corporation responsible for the Cadillac ELR, the Chevy Volt, and the Chevy Spark EV, Reuss speaks from experience. He pointed out that despite slow sales growth for some alternative fuel models, he is happy with the current market strength of the Volt, and looks forward to cutting the sticker price of the hybrid in the near future.

GM President: Video

The Detroit Auto Show has been a beehive of activity this year, featuring everything from important corporate announcements to trend-setting vehicle unveilings. GM’s Cadillac division was at the center of attention when it came time to hand out the Car of the Year awards, too. The North American COTY went to Cadillac’s ATS. The 49-member jury placed the luxury sport sedan in the top spot as a result of, among other things, incredible teamwork by Cadillac employees who were responsible for the winning model. In the video clip above, some of the team members speak in their own words about what the accomplishment means to them. Coincidentally, one of the other stars of NAIAS 2013 is the Cadillac ELR, a hybrid-electric car that is similar in many ways to the Chevy Volt.

GM President Says EV Very Much Alive

One of GM’s competitors, Nissan, recently slashed the price of its electric Leaf by $6,000 in an effort to boost sales and introduce a new demographic to the car. GM chief Reuss, states that the EV is very much alive, “… despite what you might hear, and despite what you might read about Americans not being ready for it …”

The North American Car and Truck of the Year winners were announced at the Detroit Auto Show on Monday. Cadillac’s ATS took the COTY trophy, while Ram 1500 Pickup walked off with Truck/Utility of the Year honors. Many industry analysts considered the Ram a surprise victor in a competitive category where several other favorites were getting the majority of pre-award press coverage.

Car and Truck of the Year: Video

The ATS is just one of a pair of Cadillacs turning heads at this year’s NAIAS. For an in-depth review of the company’s ELR hybrid, watch the following video. Though some of the data is not carved in stone, Cadillac will say that the Volt-like vehicle’s zero-to-sixty time will be approximately 8 seconds, with a top speed of 100 mph. Sporting a slightly more powerful motor than the Volt, ELR’s electric range will be about the same, at 35 miles per charge. A child of the Converj concept, Cadillac’s newest hybrid production vehicle, and only one so far, boasts 288 lithium-ion cells and a 16.5 kWh capacity. From a 240-volt charging hookup, the battery pack can be refilled in just 4.5 hours. From a standard household outlet, it will take 12 hours to charge up the ELR.

Car and Truck of the Year

Cadillac chief engineer for ATS, Dave Leone, commented on the significance of the award, saying, “When you consider Cadillac’s effort to reestablish itself as the ‘standard of the world,’ this is an important moment.” Cadillac has been nominated one time in the 20-year history of the award, but this is its first win. Ram has been a winner in the past for Truck of the Year, thus this marked their second trip to the podium. The company’s general manager, Fred Diaz, was obviously having a great day, concluding, “I need someone to come up here and pinch me to make sure that this has really happened.”

The North American International Auto Show will open its doors to the media just hours from now, and much of the automotive press is already focused on three vehicles; the Cadillac ELR, the new Corvette, and the Acura NSX hybrid. The world’s first green Caddy, and the first luxury hybrid from the makers of Chevy Volt, will be unleashed on a hungry media. About a year from now, the car is expected to go on sale. Though official prices are not confirmed, look for a sticker somewhere just north of $60,000 for the ELR, which isn’t bad considering the fact that buyers are getting a Cadillac, a hybrid, and a luxury car all at once.

Cadillac at Detroit Show: Video

If you can’t wait for the Detroit Auto Show to see the finalized version of Cadillac’s ELR hybrid-electric luxury car, then the following video clip will quench your curiosity. Thanks to some intrepid photographers, there is plenty of spy video of the ELR doing test runs in its camo paintjob and under deep cover. Some car enthusiasts are able to deduce huge amounts of information from such glimpses, but you will just have to see for yourself. There are some close up shots of the car as it drives a total of about a mile or so on some rather deserted roads. No doubt, the car’s Detroit debut will not resemble this undercover styling. Look for coverage right here on MyPerfectAutomobile when the real deal is unveiled in a few days at NAIAS.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBfS4DIUI5k

Cadillac, Corvette, NSX

Honda will be showing off its 2016 Acura NSX. The two-wheel, all-wheel-drive sports car has three electric motors as well as a V6 combustion engine, all of which creates 500 horsepower.

The last entry of the “amazing three,” the newest version of Corvette, is expected to sell for just over $50,000. The famous car will meet throngs of global media representatives when it is unveiled at the show. The fresh-faced Vette will be in showrooms by the second half of this year.

For all the latest on the Detroit Auto Show, see the official NAIAS website for the event:

On Saturday, Jan. 19, at precisely 9:00 a.m., two of the nation’s largest auto shows will open their doors to the public. Both the North American International Auto Show and the Philly Auto Show will start letting members of the public through their gates. Detroit will have the Via Motors X-Truck; a range-extended workhorse from Bob Lutz and Co. Philadelphia will feature its Mustang/Camaro Showdown for the first time. Akin to a People’s Choice Award, show attendees are allowed to vote after seeing the local Camaro and Mustang clubs put their best models on display.

Auto Shows: Video

The short video clip below features sights and sounds of last year’s Philadelphia Auto Show. Not as large as its counterpart in Detroit, the show has a character all its own and has earned a reputation for its wide array of classic and concept cars. This year’s ride-and-drive, as well as the show’s floor space, will be the biggest in its history. It is a lucky coincidence for those who live between the two cities. Rarely do a pair of major auto shows open to the public on exactly the same day.

Auto Shows

The NAIAS in Detroit will this year debut the highly anticipated Cadillac ELR, a range-extended Caddy that will be the first car since the Chevy Volt to use the Voltec hybrid-electric system Of course the big draw for Detroit is always the North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards. In the car category, Ford and Honda will battle it out as the two entrants who offer hybrid and plug-in versions of their primary contenders, the Fusion and the Accord.

Detroit and Philadelphia both host high-quality auto shows and see record crowds nearly every year. With the recent comeback of the auto industry, 2013 should see thousands of media and public attendees at each of the shows.

When the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) opens in January, attendees will be treated to one of the top automotive events on earth. Every major and minor vehicle manufacturer will be represented on the floor of the newly renovated Cobo Center in Detroit. For people who like firsts, NAIAS will not disappoint, with more than 50 vehicle debuts scheduled for the massive vehicular gala. Upwards of 6,000 journalists will attend Press Preview days on Jan. 14 and 15. International media registrations are up 15 percent compared to last year’s event, which itself was considered a hugely successful show.

Detroit Auto Show: Video

If last year’s NAIAS is any indication, the 2013 event will show off some groundbreaking green cars. The 2012 show covered all the bases, with a showcase of electric and hybrid vehicles that included the Smart Electric Drive, Nissan Leaf, Chevy Volt, and Ford Focus EV. Not to be left out, Tesla Motors had a large display area to show off the company’s Model S electric car. Show-goers can always count on Detroit’s event organizers to give more than a nod to green transportation. For a quick overview of the 2012 electric and hybrid models on display, have a look at the video link below.

The show runs until Jan. 27.
