Acura NSX Concept on display at NAIAS 2013

Honda Motor Co.’s Acura luxury division decided to use this year’s Detroit Motor Show to reveal its newest face for the NSX prototype. On the same floor in Cobo Hall last year, Acura showed off the first version of NSX, but this time around, the vehicle is both wider and longer, and apparently closer to maturity. Indeed, Acura’s marketing manager, Mike Accavitti, confirmed that the working prototype in Detroit this week is, “… a big step closer to the production model.”

The NSX’s newest powertrain is a sport hybrid that features leather and chrome on the inside, and three motors underneath. One is a high-tech V6 and the other two are electric. The beauty contains not one, but two LCD screens, one of which allows for driver personalization. Word from Acura officials on hand in Detroit indicate that the car will in fact be in production by 2015 or thereabouts. What it will look like is anyone’s guess, though, since the 2014 NAIAS will likely show off yet a third prototype.

Powerful, hot-looking hybrids are growing in popularity, with both the public and the racing community. In the last decade alone, hybrid race competition has come into its own, with several of the world’s largest automaker’s spending huge sums on engineering concepts. The racetrack is proving to be the most efficient testing lab for those ideas before they make their way to the showroom. In the case of NSX, 2015 can’t arrive fast enough.

Acura NSX hybrid

Honda officials, speaking to the media at this week’s Sao Paulo Motor Show, have confirmed that a production version of the company’s NSX hybrid supercar will be on display in Detroit at the 2013 North American International Auto Show. Industry insiders say the production model will be a clone of the concept car, which indicates that Honda management remains committed to the concept’s innovative design. When the car arrives in the U.S. for retail sale, it will be called Acura NSX, and will feature a lightweight body, all-wheel-drive capability, and various unique components.

Since no one has seen the production version of the 2014 NSX, the following video is perhaps the closest we will get to a ‘sighting,’ and consists of a half-dozen or so shots of the super-hybrid. One of the more futuristic hybrid concepts to come along in a decade, the NSX is sure to pack in the crowds when it makes its official production-model debut at the 2013 NAIAS on Jan. 14, where it will at last come face-to-face with an information-hungry media.

Honda Performance Development intends to place Acura NSX into the GT racing circuit within two years, in an effort to fine-tune several of the engineering functions and perhaps test some new interior features. In fact, company officials have gone on record as saying the new super-hybrid will compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans by 2015, and possibly in the American Le Mans Series as well.

This newest iteration of the Acura NSX is actually a revived version of the 1991-2005 car of the same name. From the outset of the project, the company’s CEO noted that the new NSX would not only be environmentally friendly but an exhilarating driving experience.

Acura ILX hybrid: Safety champ

Japanese automaker Acura took home top marks in the latest Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) test results. The Acura ILX was a ‘Top Safety Pick’ in the sedan category. No longer the domain of large cars, IIHS safety picks nowadays reward smart design and efficient crash-response systems, as much as weight and size. To meet or beat IIHS criteria, a car must offer superior roof strength, side and rear impact protection, and frontal overlap. The ILX is considered an entry-level car into Honda’s luxury segment, Acura. Buyers of the ILX usually are shopping for safety, efficiency, and style.

The footage also includes under-the-hood shots, along with floor-to-roof interior pans, which showcase the car’s roomy cabin and compact, efficient dashboard control panel. For the 2013 model year, the Acura ILX is using Honda’s Civic platform and offers a hybrid power train along with a combustion version. An unexpected boost for the ILX, the IIHS safety picks invariably translate into increased sales as a result of media coverage. Shoppers in the market for a family car pay close attention to insurance industry safety recommendations. While the lack of a mention typically will not hurt a model’s sales, a ‘safety pick’ is always good news for the bottom line.

In order to receive an IIHS safety pick designation, a vehicle needs to achieve ‘good’ status in all the major ranking categories. In IIHS testing, ‘good’ is the highest rated level in each area of the review.

Olympian Gabby Douglas’s dream: Acura NSX Concept

Olympic champion Gabby Douglas may be dreaming about more gold medals four years from now in Rio de Janeiro, but the first priority is getting her hands on a hybrid Acura NSX, like the one in the ‘Avengers’ motion picture. At least that’s what she says. Gabby recently told a journalist that she wants a hybrid concept car just like the one in the movie. She will have to get a license first, since the sixteen-year-old hasn’t had time due to her rigorous Olympic training schedule.

The NSX is almost as rare as an Olympic gold medal, but the video link below is about as good of a view as you will get for now. It features extensive shots of the interior, scenes from the movie, and actual footage of the sleek concept car driving on real streets.

The young Olympic champion’s mere mention of the car has received extensive coverage in the automotive press as well as in major news publications. Hot off her nearly super-human victories in London, Douglas need only mention a product for it to become an overnight sensation. Her love for the hybrid NSX has brought a new wave of interest in the car.

The Acura NSX seen in the Avengers movie is a coupe that will likely land in showrooms sometime in 2015. The same car was in the hilarious Super Bowl ads that featured Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld. The NSX, when it becomes a production car, will almost certainly feature a V-6 VTEC engine for rear-wheel power, and two electric motors for the front wheels.
